The quality of the lens, both in terms of an accurate prescription and accurate orientation of the astigmatism axis is variable. Most of the time it will be fine, but at least if the axis is off, you can fix it yourself.

Theres been such a wealth of info on this subject. Thanks all who've contributed. I'm going to get in touch with my local optician again, who on my previous visit was happy to spend time understanding what I needed, and see if they'll permit me to take my AP in with me for a final check before I order a pair specs with what should be a suitable prescription for 10m AP. Figure that a pair of properly prescribed shooting specs will suffice at my level before I start getting into the expense of things like dedicated shooting frames, lenses, irises etc.

Before you go to see your eye doctor, I strongly recommend that you read ALL of Dr. Wong's articles. His thinking on the best way to deal with shooters vision evolved over time, and I think he changed his recommendations a bit. If you are pressed for time, start with the newest ones. Thanks Gwhite, I'd bookmarked the previous link that was provided and also this new one you've put up. It's gonna be a couple of weeks at least before I go in to see the optician again so I've chance to do some background reading. All credit to my local optician, he checked all the specs I use on a manual lensometer to see how accurate the lenses were to the prescritions right back to the 2017 pair that I use for driving, the 2019 pair that I generally find suits everything else including shooting, and the 2021 pair that right now are good for close up reading only. And during the course of the hour long exam he did arrive at a slightly different prescription in one eye, by .25D, plus a small amount of astigmatism in my non-dominant left eye that the high street chain missed. I'm hoping that he's willing to do a bit of background reading of Dr. Wongs articles too before I go in next time.

Sounds like you found a good guy! A lot of the newer optical shops are all about marketing & making money ahead of providing the best possible service to the customer. If this guy listens & the results work well for you, grab some business cards and let your local shooting buddies know. He deserves the added business.
