This will come as a nasty shock to those using 300m EST with only three detectors (microphones) - it's a 2 dimensional problem with shot locations with x.y coordinates.

Sorry, I was referring to GPS. Yes, you only need 3 sensors for a planar solution. You could use the extra sensor for some error checking. By comparing the 4 location solutions you can identify a single sensor error.
