Post by OLD DOG »

CAN ANY HARDBALL GUN SHOOTERS ENLIGHTEN ME ON WHAT RECOIL SPRING LB. RATING IS PREFERED ON A HARDBALL 1911 PISTOL. I AM USING A 17LB.SPRING BUT I WAS TOLD I AM OVER SPRINGED. ALSO ANY THOUGHTS ON RECOIL BUFFERS?

Hardball is a relative term nowadays with CMP allowing handloads in EIC matches. So with that said I have always used 18lb springs while using military issue ammo. But the gunsmith build method can also determine needed spring rate too. I believe 16lb is the original rating so 17lb doesn't seem to be overrated to me.
I heard of people using 20 and 22 pounders to reduce recoil but I've heard that these will cause damage to the pistol from the breech face smashing into the barrel hood.

I believe most ballgun builders today add the shock buffer as a little added insurance. I use one. You shouldn't be hitting it but if your spring weakens the buffer will get beat up and you should see this during cleaning and know to replace the spring or increase the spring pressure.

Hope this helps.
