Cash Awards and ISSF and NCAA Rules

Post by Misny »

We have a collegiate/ junior on our team. He recently won some parts of an NRA tournament, and they give cash awards. It is a relatively small amount of money. I have researched the NRA rules and accepting cash awards does not affect his eligibility as far as NRA Civilian Pistol Team, junior or collegiate status. My question is would this affect his eligibility to compete under ISSF or NCAA rules?

ISSF rule 4.1.4:-

Shooters who compete in ISSF Championships may accept, directly or indirectly, money payments or other prizes as awards or as an inducement to take part in a competition, except that no shooter's participation in the Olympic Games may be conditional on any financial consideration (Bye-Law to Rule 41 of the Olympic Charter).

Thanks for the quick response David. As far as I could find out, according to the NCAA rules, as long as the prize money doesn't exceed "actual and necessary expenses", which in this case it doesn't even come close. He should be ok. I'm not even sure that the school he is attending is an NCAA school.

NCAA

The NCAA is "VERY" picky about these types of things. I would suggest he contact the school's "Director of Compliance" before he accepts anything. This seems like a simple thing for us to evaluate, but we don't think like the NCAA.
