RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil - The U.S. Shooting Team was on fire at the Pan-American Games July 17, grabbing five medals, including two Gold. Jason Turner of Rochester, N.Y., who earned the 50-Meter Free Pistol title July 16, was crowned the Men's 10-Meter Air Pistol Champion July 17 at the Deodoro Sports Complex. The shooting competition will run through July 21.

"It is very exciting and always a goal when you are coming in to these (competitions) to try and win, but to actually achieve this is very satisfying," said Turner who also snagged the title at the 2003 Pan-American Games.

Also medaling in the Men's 10-Meter Air Pistol was Sgt. 1st Class Thomas A. Rose of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit of Fort Benning, Ga., who earned a Bronze Medal in the event.

The United States also grabbed double medals in the Men's 50-Meter Free Rifle Prone event. USAMU's Sgt. 1st Class Thomas A. Tamas took home a Gold Medal while Spc. Michael D. McPhail joined him on the podium with a Silver Medal. Since Tamas already won an Olympic Quota Slot for the USA, this Quota Slot went to McPhail.

The final U.S. medal of the day was awarded to Corey Cogdell of Eagle River, Alaska, in the Women's Trap event. Cogdell took home a Bronze Medal in her Pan-American Games debut. The U.S. Shooting Team currently owns 11 medals, including five Gold, and will look to add to the count July 18 during the Men's Double Trap Final.

Good Job!

Were Jason & Thomas ineligible for quota slots- or has the USA already earned all our potential quotas for MAP?

Daryl won FP at CAT games, Thomas won Air at Cat games, and Jason won FP at Pan Ams. once you win a quota you can not win another one in the same quad. As of now we have 2 in mens free, 1 in mens air, 1 in womens air, 2 in womens sport i think, and 1 in mens rapid fire.

So by winning a quota slot in FP, Jason was ineligible to win a slot in MAP?

If winning a quota in any discipline makes one ineligible to win a quota in any other discipline, then right now neither Jason, Darryl, nor Thomas (nor Keith Sanderson) are eligible to pick up any quotas for the US?

You are correct, once an individual wins a quota he's finished (he can double start at the Olympics ie if he wins his quota in FP as long as he has an MQS in Air he can shoot in AP or Rapid fire for that matter, but he has to have an MQS in the other events for which he didn't win the quota in). Thats why some countries didn't send people who already have quotas. Canada didn't send Johan Sauer because he has a quota in the hopes that another athlete would be able to pick up a quota.

The quotas just keep getting hand down if the people already have a quota, if the first place guy has one, the quota goes to the second place finisher, if he has one it goes to the third place finisher and so on down the line.

Also there is the maximum number of quotas a nation can have in a discipline too, I beleive it's two (not sure about shotgun).

Each country can only enter 2 shooters per event except in Women's Trap and Skeet where it is one. This means that each country can only win that number of quota places.

Even if you have double starters each country can only have that number of shooters except in the Women's Trap and Skeet where you can have 2.

This is all covered by Annex Q Rule 4 of the ISSF Rules:-

Q.4.0 QUALIFICATION SYSTEM
Q.4.1 Maximum participation per country (NOC) per event:
Q.4.1.1 In the Olympic events the maximum participation per country (NOC) per event is two (2) shooters except in the Trap and Skeet events for women in which the qualification per country is limited to one (1) athlete only.
Q.4.1.2 Each shooter, however, who has been entered in one event in a quota place by his NOC, can be entered as a double starter in other events if he has also obtained the minimum qualification scores in the other events. NOCs are not allowed to enter more than two (2) shooters in any event.
Q.4.1.3 For Trap and Skeet events for women each country is limited to one
(1) athlete quota only but may enter up to two (2) athletes if the second athlete is a double starter.
Q.4.2 If an NOC enters one (1) athlete as a double starter in any event in which it has also obtained the possible number of quota place(s), the quota place must be returned to the ISSF/IOC to be granted as an additional quota place. On request of an NOC/ISSF Member Federation one (1) quota place in one event can be changed for one (1) quota place in any other event if available.
Q.4.3 Entered double starters on a quota place may be replaced by a substitute (alternate) with quota place in any other event and MQS only before the deadline for receipt of the Final Entry Forms by the Organizing Committee of the Games (21 days before the Opening Ceremony).
Q.4.4 If a substitution is required by an emergency, the ISSF General Regulations, Article 3.7.6.3 may be used, except that all substitutions must be made according to the IOC regulations valid for the Olympic Games. Such substitution automatically surrenders the accreditation of the replaced athlete.
