Handling Fees for Flying with Firearms? The 19 June edition of The Shooting Wire (www.shootingwire.com) posted this report on an Air Canada action that warrants concern by U. S. shooters should this potentially discriminatory fee ever be adopted by U. S. airlines:
Air Canada has announced a hefty service charge for firearms on all their flights. Effective June 5, a handling fee of $50 (US and Canadian) will apply for all tickets purchased on or after April 14, 2006. The one-way charge will raise the total cost of traveling Air Canada with a firearm $100 per round-trip ticket. The airline says the new charge is not specifically for firearms, but will apply to "all items" requiring special handling from surfboards to firearms. Reports indicate, however, that Air Canada is not charging the fee for golf clubs. Other air carriers are said to be "watching the response" to the Air Canada decision. Barring a significant backlash, we can probably expect the charge to start appearing on domestic carriers.
This additional information was reported in the NSSF Bullet Points (https://www.nssf.org/BP2/subscribe/inde ... oI=generic) on 20 June: Rethinking Air Canada Fees - Based on a litany of complaints and a petition from sportsmen groups, the Canadian Transportation Agency has suspended Air Canada’s new $50 handling fee per checked firearm, reported in last week's Bullet Points. The suspension applies only to international flights for the duration of a review process, while the agency considers whether the fees are "just and reasonable."
