China Worldcup 1st Day Competition

Post by pilkguns in China »

First day of competition here in Guangzhou. Ryan Tanoue and Joe Hein competed in the Men’s Air Rifle today. Joe is better known as a smallbore shooter and was shooter air rifle here to gain experience. He turned in a respectable 587 for 19th place. Ryan a Gold Medalist in Air Rifle at the Munich World Cup a little over 9 months ago, was having an off day leaving him out the final by nine points and in 34th place.

One curiosity about this event is that it is being shot on paper targets, with only the finals being run on Sius Ascor electronic targets. Paper targets are normally no big deal, but in this case the organizing committee is using some local production which does not have the ISSF approval such as Edelmann or a few other European manufacturers have. And the paper seems a bit “tearry” rather than punching out crisp holes. This is sure to be aggravated by the moist air caused by the intermittent rain that pours down at times. This range, while covererd is still very nearly an outdoor range.

On the 50 meter range, Tom Rose and John Ennis were shooting in the elimination round to determine which shooters would compete in the real match tomorrow. More news on that later

The biggest sponsor of this event is something called Haoshili Yantie. Nearly every pillar in this range is covered with the 15 feet long banners advertising it. This is an eye patch, actually one for each eye, a moist eye covering that you lay on your closed eyelids for 20 minutes. Supposedly the healing herbs penetrate and relieve your eye muscles “with best herbs and medicines”. “Very effective with utmost power, protection of your eyes”. A number of us tried to get a clear understanding of what it was supposed to be doing or how it worked in theory , but all we got was poorly translated rhetoric. It is funny to me, that a company that was spending so much money as the biggest sponsor of this event could have at least gotten someone who spoke better English overall

They are very common in the Middle East (Iraq, Afghanistan, Saudi etc) and also Asia...all over Korea and China last time I visited in 97-98. Takes a little getting use too, especially in the Middle East where they don't use TP...there is normally a "water hose" next to the bowl or a bucket with water to wash with after you do your business. One reason you don't use your left hand at traditional middle eastern meals (where you sit on the floor and eat with your hands out of a communial bowl/plate) is it's the "dirty hand" if you catch my drift. Last tour training Iraqi's in-country I made sure to carry my own TP supply. Never could predict where I'd be spending the night or for how long.

Thanks for the pictures Scott.
