how about a classic airgun category at the USASNC
As many of you know, I am offering cash prizes for the USASNC for airgun events
http://www.pilkguns.com/natspm.htm
Since I seem to be selling a lot of the used classics like Walther LGRs, FWB 300s, and FWB 65s and 80s and 100s, I was wondering if there would be any interest in having a "classics" category within the USASNC. Lets say you shoot anything other than a gas gun (CO2 or CA propelled) and you are competing in a seperate category, for prizes,
Maybe $150 for air rifle first, $100 for second, 60 for 5th and 40 for 7th place.. Maybe more depeding on how many show up
maybe the same prize amounts for air pistol.
How many folks would be willing to come and compete if I did that? Would be same course of fire shot at the same time as the unlimited event, except this category would give some of you backyard guys a chance to compete evently against one another.
I'm looking for feedback and numbers here, so fire away.

I think it's a great idea , get some of the proud old beauties out of the closet ! The old gear had soul , great beauty , and craftsmanship . We would need to use the old rifle and pistol targets . In my youth I could never afford FWB stuff , and had to " make do " with a Walther LP53 , a Walther LG55 , and a HW55 Tyro . NSRA and SSRA rules , no modern jackets , pants , boots etc . It would be a lot of fun .

Scott, I think that is a great idea. However I do have a suggestion.
Disclaimer: it is unlikely I'll go to the Nationals in the forseeable future, so this is just a bystander comment, FWIW.
I would suggest that the category of "classic" airgun needs to be defined somewhat differently than you sketched above. There are several current production SSP models of rifle and pistol made that are highly evolved and competitive with the top CA and CO2 guns - e.g. Anschutz 2002 rifle, FWB 103 pistol.
My suggestion would be to base the category on a last-year-produced date, or perhaps even the playing field in some other way based on technological advances. I don't think a competitor with an old Hammerli CO2 pistol would be competing evenly against someone with a FWB 103.
Whatever you do, though, I hope the idea goes forward.

That sounds like a lot of fun! Would it be held at a different time than the actual Championship matches? Some of us also would shoot the real modern stuff for competitive reasons, but this "oldies" match could be an additional thing to do. How about a few different relays for those of us with more than one old gun. (I'm another shooter that started with an HW55 Tirolean & a Walther LGR! Small world, eh?)
What would you have for clothing rules? - three button jackets only?! Now that would be really retro!
This whole thing might make it worth driving 1000+ miles to get there.
How about doing this at Camp Perry too?

reality check
If I understand it correctly, Scott was not proposing (and I'm fairly sure he has no time or desire) to run any kind of separate match or relay. He was suggesting that he would consider funding a separate category of prizes to be awarded WITHIN the existing structure of the Nationals.
Shooters who may not have the newest top-of-the-line equipment or perform at the highest levels could choose to participate, within the existing matches, using a "classic" gun, and have a chance to win something. Having a potentially achievable goal might be enough incentive to draw some shooters who otherwise would not attend the Nationals.
If that summary is correct, then he needs to get an idea of how many shooters would commit to attend the Nationals and shoot their "classic" guns.
Scott - please correct me if I misstated your idea.

I don't think I'd pay $95 for tagging along family member to shoot and I don't think the army wants the lamps and frames of the electronic targets torn up by plinkers (hopefully its just the paint that gets torn up, but there would be a lot of ricochets)
but a FUN match, run after the main matches are done, when we all have free time and we don't have to choose the real match or the fun match, $10 entry fee, that would be fun! If I drive again I'd consider bringing my FWB300.
I quit shooting garand match at Perry because after rattle battle and before the awards ceremony its just too much for one day, I have never shot the vintage bolt (springfield) match because CMP team match was the same day and that was more important to me, even tho I ran such matches at my club as early as 1993. http://arizona.rifleshooting.com/mm1.html
