Summer Shooting Opportunities for Juniors - Summers can be a special time for junior shooters. Without the time demands of school, summers offer more time for extra training as well as the travel necessary to compete in the most important championships of the year. The May-June 2004 issue of On the Mark reviewed shooting opportunities that were available to junior shooters last summer. This year, we will again looks at the many shooting opportunities that can make this summer a special time for junior shooters.

Sea Cadet Air Rifle Camp - A return to the basics was in store for the 2005 CMP three position summer camp program as the first marksmanship camp for the Navy’s Sea Cadets was held at Camp Perry at the end of June. Marksmanship has never been offered before in the Sea Cadet program so the two week camp was the first exposure to three position sporter air rifle for the 60 cadets participating.

The Sea Cadet Air Rifle Camp took place at Camp Perry, OH on 19 June - 3 July. A total of 60 cadets participated in the camp.

Sea Cadet Air Rifle Camp: A Coaches View - This is a fantastic Sea Cadet camp! There were sixty (60) sea cadets in the marksmanship camp, mostly from the midwest, but really from all over. I had eight sea cadets in my coaching unit from California, New Jersey, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Michigan. One of them had just come from LCDR Perez's recruit training in Florida.

Greek .30-06 Ammo Arrives. CMP South staff at Anniston, AL recently unloaded a huge shipment of Greek .30-06 ammo that the CMP recently acquired and is preparing for sale. To see an interesting video clip of the ammo unloading process on the CMP warehouse dock, click here.

CMP National Matches Filling Fast. Entry spaces are still available in the Pistol National Trophy Matches that take place at Camp Perry, Ohio on 17 July and competitors can submit entries up to the day before the match. Entry spaces are still available in the Rifle President’s and National Trophy Individual Matches that take on 2-3 August, although entry spaces in those matches are now rapidly filling.

If you plan to shoot in President’s and National Trophy Individual Service Rifle Matches on 2-3 August, get your entries in as quickly as possible. You can enter all CMP matches on-line at http://clubs.odcmp.com/cgi-bin/index.cgi. Click on “NT Pistol Registration” or “NT Rifle Registration” and follow the directions. Three rifle matches, the John C. Garand Match, the Springfield/Vintage Military Rifle Match and the M16 EIC Match were filled to range capacity two weeks ago and now have large waiting lists. In events this large, there are always several cancellations and CMP staff will move waitlisted competitors up into the matches in the order their entry was received. In past years, these matches have also had large numbers of no-shows. When a match is filled to capacity and there is a waiting list, this is unfortunate, because a no-show effectively denies someone else a chance to compete. To get as many waitlisted competitors into the matches as possible, the CMP is doing two things. First, we ask that any competitors with confirmed entries who now know they will not be able to shoot at Camp Perry to please contact CMP Competitions at 419-635-2141, ext. 1132 or competitions@odcmp.com to cancel your entry. Second, because many of the no-shows have been shooters who entered, but did not pay their entry fees, a deadline of 23 July was established for payment of National Matches rifle entry fees. Competitors who are entered in any events that are filled who have not paid their entry fees by that date will be moved to the waitlist and the next shooters on the waitlist will be moved up into the match.

Confirm Your National Matches Entry Status On-Line. The CMP Competitor Tracker on-line entry and results system now offers a new feature that allows competitors who enter an event to check the entry data that the CMP has for them. For example, if you entered the 2005 National Trophy Pistol Matches, you can check your entry by clicking on http://clubs.odcmp.com/cgi-bin/index.cgi. Then select “NT Pistol Registration.” When the “Match Information” screen comes up, click on ‘Entry Confirmation.” You will be asked to provide your CMP competitor number and date of birth or your registration number for that match. After you provide that data, you will be shown your complete registration page including category information and the matches in which you are entered. Starting on 9 July, when pistol competitors are squadded, you will also be able to see your squadding assignment. Contact information is provided in case you need to request corrections.

Rimfire Sporter Match. Entries in the CMP’s National Rimfire Sporter Match have already exceeded 2004 entries with more entries continuing to come in. This year’s match will be on Sunday, 24 July. There will be a clinic the afternoon before and match day will conclude with a cookout hosted by CMP staff.

If this new recreation oriented match for sporter-type rimfire rifles interests you, be sure to sign up and give it a try. You are in for a unique experience. Enter on-line at http://clubs.odcmp.com/cgi-bin/matchInf ... atchID=828.
