2005 Georgia High School Rifle Championship. The Georgia High School Association completed its state rifle championship on April 9. Georgia, always a stronghold for youth marksmanship competition, boasts some of the best young shooters in the country. This year’s championships provided ample evidence of this excellence. Winning championship team honors was Northside High School in Columbus with a score of 1142 x 1200. Northside finished three points ahead of the second place finisher, Woodward Academy of College Park. Northside was making only its second appearance ever in the state championship; it finished fourth in 2004 and won its first rifle championship this year. Woodward Academy had won the state championship the last three years in a row. Individual championship honors went to Philip Huckaby of Spalding High School for his score of 394.1. Huckaby finished five points higher than second place finisher Dana Philen of Woodward Academy. Interestingly, this is a reverse of last year’s final standings where Philen earned the gold medal and Huckaby the silver. The CMP congratulates all the competitors who earned the chance to compete for Georgia state championship honors! Champion Shooter Wins in School Dispute. High school student and California Scholastic Clay Target Program Champion Courtland Huish has come to an agreement with the school district that disciplined him for wearing an SCTP shirt to class just because it depicted a sport shooter with a shotgun. Huish's challenge resulted in a new dress code that changes the previous "zero tolerance" for depiction of firearms to one that prohibits depictions of the illegal use of guns. Read about it his win, with assistance from firearms attorney Chuck Michel, in The Sacramento Bee.
