2004 FINAL OLYMPIC RIFLE, PISTOL and RUNNING TARGET TEAM TRIALS
FORT BENNING, Ga. – Koby Holland (Dillon, Mont.) and Adam Saathoff (Hereford, Ariz.) have jumped out in front after the second day of competition in the Men’s Running Target Final Olympic Team Trials Saturday at Fort Benning’s Pool Ranges.
Holland led the men after the first day with a total score of 671.3. He came out today and shot a 672, putting him in first place and in a great position to qualify for the 2004 Olympic Games. Holland moves into the last day of competition with a two-day total of 1,343.3
Saathoff, a two-time Olympian in this event, picked up some much needed cushion by hitting a 677.8 in today’s event. Now, with just around a 20-point lead on both Michael Fredrickson (Belgrade, Mont.) and Staff Sgt. Armando Ayala (El Paso, Texas), Saathoff remains in a fairly comfortable position to make the Olympic Team.
In the men’s three-position rifle match, it was no surprise that Matt Emmons (Browns Mills, N.J.) led the way once again. Emmons, who has been on fire this past week, already clinched two spots on this year’s Olympic Team—one in men’s air and one in men’s prone—and looks forward to this being his third. Emmons currently leads with a 1,276.8, 12 points above his competition.
In the second spot, in men’s three-position, is two-time Olympian Ken Johnson (Crawfordville, Fla.) with a 1,264.9. Johnson hit a final score of 97.9 to beat Olympian’s Eric Uptagrafft (Spokane, Wash.) and Major Michael Anti (Winterville, N.C). Uptagrafft shot a 94.5 in the final, while Anti hit a 93.8—both of which are surprisingly low scores for the long-time rifle shooters. Anti has already won a spot on the 2004 Olympic Team in men’s prone, but looked at this as his strongest event.
However, there are still two days left in the rifle competition and a lot more shooting to go. So for more information and full results, please log on to www.usashooting.org.
