Camp Perry Improvements

Shooters who come to Camp Perry this summer for the National Matches will see lots of new improvements. This First Shot On-Line article tells about new Camp Perry roads, rebuilt huts and mod­ules and a new CMP commitment to keep the National Trophy Matches at Camp Perry for many years in the future.

The “New Look” for the famous Camp Perry Huts built for use during World War II. The huts are used today for competitor housing during the National Matches.

Guns of the National Matches Wins Major Award

The Guns of the National Matches display that was seen by 4,000 competitors during the 2003 Centennial National Matches was re-created for the 2004 NRA Convention. There the display was not only seen by many of the 61,000 convention visitors, but it won the NRA Gun Collectors Trophy awarded annually to the most out­standing display in the show.

CMP ROTC Scholarship Winners Announced

Each year the CMP cooperates with the Army, Navy and Marine Corps cadet commands to award up to 100 one thousand dollar college scholarships to high school and college students who demonstrate outstanding academic, leadership and rifle marksmanship qualifications. 2004 U. S. Olympic Shooting Team Trials

During the next two weeks, the last of the trials competitions for the 2004 U. S. Olympic Shooting Team that will compete in the Athens Olympics in August will be completed. The clay target Olympians were selected in trials earlier this spring. The first half of the pistol trials were held last fall. The last Olympic trials start on 20 May and continue through 3 June. 2005 World Masters Games Offers Shooting

Shooting is one of 27 sports that will be organized in next summer’s World Masters Games. The Games will take place at Edmonton, Alberta, Canada on 22-31 July, 2005. Competitors from all over the world are expected to attend the Masters competitions that stress life-long participation in sports competition. The shooting program includes four shotgun, two full-bore rifle, seven pistol and seven rifle events, plus two pistol and four rifle events for disabled competitors. 4-H Shooting Sports Adventure Camp

It’s not too late for youth and adult leaders who participate in 4-H shooting sports activities to register for the National 4-H Shooting Sports Adventure Camp that the CMP will conduct at Camp Perry on 20-24 July in cooperation with the National 4-H Shooting Sports Committee. The camp features advanced three-position air rifle training and competitions plus unique competition opportunities in Rimfire Sporter and a new NSSF Scholastic Rifle event. Campers will stay at Camp Perry during the National Matches and have a chance to enjoy many of the fascinating experiences of these historic competitions. 2004 NM Junior Smallbore Support Program

The 2004 National Matches Junior Smallbore Support Program will provide two $150.00 National Matches Smallbore Expense Grants per state. The Expense Grants will be administered through the CMP State Junior Directors (SJDs) and recipients must be selected on the basis of a competition within the state. More Details

1st Annual NSSF Scholastic Rifle Program Invitational

The National Shooting Sports Foundation is sponsoring its first Scholastic Rifle Program competition at Camp Perry on 23 July. Coaches and individual junior shooters who are interested in participating in this new event can obtain information by going to the NSSF web site at http://www.nssf.org/srp/. Participants in the NSSF Scholastic Rifle Program Invitational will also have an opportunity to compete in the CMP National Rimfire Sporter Championship that takes place at Camp Perry on the following day, 24 July.


New Rimfire Sporter Guide Available

Individuals and clubs interested in learning more about Rimfire Sporter shoot­ing can answer their questions about this exciting new recreation-oriented shooting game for rimfire rifles by requesting a copy of the new CMP Guide to Rimfire Sporter Shooting. This 30-page guide covers the rules, how to shoot Rimfire Sporter and how to conduct a match. It also offers lots of tips on basic rifle shooting skills needed to complete the course of fire.
