Eley Target 22LR Ammo Problems

Post by Shiloh »

Has anyone had any issues lately with this ammo?

I ask because I have had several rounds make a "poof" sound and didn't have enough force to cycle the slides and eject the brass. The bullets all cleared the barrels (208s, Kart conversion on a Colt National Match (1960 vintage), MatchGuns MG2, Walther GSP Expert 22).

All pistols normally operate without issue with any of the standard velocity brands (CCI, RWS Target Pistol, Norma TAC, AG, 711B, SK Match).

Greetings,

Take a box and weigh each cartridge.

There is somewhere near 2.0 grains of powder, if I recall.

Then take the "light" ones and test fire them.

Perhaps a call to the Eley distributor and ask about replacement?

Or, you could do like Western Cartridge did in the 1960's with a bad lot. Take them out to the pit and burn them.

Cheers,

Dave

Eley Orange and Cello together have accounted for about 1 in 300 of the type of flawed round that you're describing. Given that they group a bit better than CCI and CCI has had about the same failure rate, I'm sticking with Eley. They are about fifty percent higher priced but the accuracy improvement over CCI together with the waxy coating which precludes having to oil the top round in the magazine (necessary for one of my target 22's) make it worth it to me. Black box is NOT worth the added price at my skill level (275/300).

Found a better, and proper, way to deal with the problem.

Have no desire to deal with an ammo batch that results in alibis in CMP Pistol matches or NRA Precision Pistol Tournaments. I don't care why or feel it to be my job to determine why the ammo did not preform as advertized or desired.

I contacted Eley and they are having replacement ammo sent as well as shipping label to return what I have remaining of my last purchase.

Responses from Michele at Eley and James at Champion's Choice in this matter have been great.

I've had problems with the Eley target ammo(yellow box)
When i used to have a Walther SSP
Some of the cartridge would not go off
It was randomly, 2-3 rounds per boxes(or sometimes more)
You could clearly see it was hit
I stopped using it
I never had any problems with any other brands
Never had a problems with the SSP

I have a Pardini SP New.

Excellent performance with quite a number of ammunition suppliers.

had a problem with Eley target. Not enough horsepower to reliably cycle in cooler temperatures, 50 degrees Fahrenheit or below.

Hot weather? no problem. cold or cooler weather, I will shoot something else thank you.

This comment is about Eley Club rather than Eley Target. Shooting an older Marvel conversion in competition, I had had very good luck using the Eley standard velocity ammunition sold by the CMP at 25 yards (six cases of it) and Eley Club at 50 yards (two cases of it). The most recent case of Club I purchased was another matter entirely. In addition to a few failures to fire I was getting some rounds going into the target tipped and even some going into the target sideways, as well as hits well wide of call. In sixty years of competitive shooting I've never had this happen with any lot of any manufacturer's .22 ammunition. After a series of email exchanges with Eley staff - including providing photos of tipped and sideways shots on targets - Eley exchanged the balance of the case; 4,400 rounds. I have to give them credit for standing by their product. The replacement lot of Club is performing properly.

Don, was the six cases of Eley from CMP the bulk ammo packed in 500 ct. boxes? I've always wondered what the equivalent of it was to other Eley ammo.
