Puzzle with book authors and copyright laws

Post by UnGe »

I have 2 book: Ragnar Skanaker's "Master Competitive Pistol Shooting" (2016) and Laslo Antal's "Competitive Pistol Shooting" (1983).

I've read Ragnar's book first, and had a strange feeling - with all the tremendous quality of practical advices, sometimes reading was paused by questions: why they did not hire translator or editor? Why Ragnar sometimes refers to himself in the third person? What does advise to keep feet at the angle between 370 and 420 mean?

After a huge "Deja vu" while reading Laslo's book, I had to compare them.
The first looks like slightly updated (and rushed with updates) for new realities second one, with ~9/10 text overlap,  OCR that was buggy (read degree sign as zero) and bad proofreading/editing (resulting in grammar errors and feeling of foreign accent in parts where they diverge).

Does anybody know what is gong on?

Are you sure it's 370 and 420, not 37˚ and 42˚? That would make much more sense, wouldn't it?

To be clear: original has 37˚ and 42˚, Ragnar's book transformed it to 370 and 420

To stop focusing on minor issues / bugs / errors. My main question is about moral and legal issues of publishing perhaps updated, but sill a copy of a book under different name(s).

Laslo Antal published multiple books,

Pistol Shooting, Know the Game, 1980 ISBN 9780715806739

Competitive Pistol Shooting 1983 ISBN 9780715807873

Competitive Pistol Shooting 1989 ISBN 9780713655698

He co-published a book with Ragnar Skanaker in 1985 called Pistol Shooting in multiple languages, English, German and Swedish

All the four books are very similar with minor updates and additions over the years. I would presume Skanaker had some publishing rights from the 1985 book which is heavily leaned upon in his new book “Master Competitive Pistol Shooting” 2016.

They are all great books regardless of which version you own. I am ashamed to say I think I own all but the 1980 version.

I note our friend from "Old Europe" deleted his piece of contrived circumlocution. The stuff people come up with when they have nothing to say but feel compelled to say it anyway! 400˚ circles? Indeed.

Private messages I receive show that I was not clear with my concerns.

- Books have majority of text identical, not jut subjects they cover.
- Books show copyrights for different people. Ragnar's book copyright does not include Laslo, and vice versa.
- I by no means question Ragnar's greatness as a shooter :)

I am always willing to give benefit of doubt, perhaps there is some explanation, but just from dates of publishing later book seem to violate copyright laws.

Your ignorance is impressive.
The use of a 400 degree circles is fairly common.

Nope. 400 gon, or gradian, circles are used in some places, but there is NO 400 degree circle. A gon, or grad (gradian,) is 9/10 of a degree.

Sorry there, Old European. Look at the very source you cite.

Expressing a disregard of common people (forum members) in general?

I simply love that expression..

Apparently, the retreat from mythical 400˚ circles ends in the realm of psychobabble.

Here's a suggestion: Take the original snippet - the one you constantly paste into your comments (about the value of strangers' opinions), and put it in its original context. But that would ruin your fun, wouldn't it?

About the posture of Ragnar Skanåker: I recall, from my experience at firings points next to him, at some occations at internaional competitions, that his posture was an average some 40 to 45 degrees angle, relative to the direction of target. So the written 37 to 42 degrees in the mentioned book agrees fairly well with my memories.
