Getting Varga 3000s

Post by Xman »

The set has the large pistol lens and a offset smaller lens. It also has 2 different nose pieces. One straight and one really offset.

I imagine that the small lens and offset nose piece is for rifle, but is part of the deal.

Question is now what?

My current O.D. is sphere -4.50, Cylinder +0.75, axis 1.05, FYI the add is 2.25 but that is for bifocal.

In read past posts I read I would want to add -0.50 or -0.75 to my sphere to get a good front sight focus and keep the target "sharp" enough to get a good 6 o'clock hold and not get the bull edge "very" blurry to the point of losing it.

Am I correct in my thinking?

+0.50 or +0.75 for older shooters and stronger light.
The black and the rear sight will be blurry, but that is inevitable if focusing on the front sight.

...unless a small diameter adjustable iris 4mm or less is used which may or may not be to your taste as light is reduced.

Yes plus 0.5/0.75 not minus!

Yes, I use an Eyepal which allows more light to get through.

good to have +0.75 and +0.50 both.

I actually bought a trial lens set and a trial lens frame (yeah, the one with 256 lens) to find out best prescription for my eyes. What I have found is that +0.75 is a good point to start, but always nice to have +0.50 lens to fine tune. My best distance prescription plus +0.75 might not yield the best vision on the front sight.

Use both +0.75 and +0.50. +1.0 is an overkill.
Use vertex distance, move closer or further, to fine tune front sight clarity at your arm's length.

If you go on ebay you can usually order single trial lenses. I found one of the people breaking up sets to sell for jewelry and asked them to pull specific powers. Like $2 a lens. Since they are 38mm OD with the frames I'm hoping it fits in the 37mm lens holders. Just ordered my Rx +0.25,+0.50,+0.75,+1.0 so I would be able to find what I like best. They should arrive friday. I'll let you know if they fit.

(BTW, I'm -5.0 sphere so I actually ordered -4.75, -4.5,-4.25, and -4.0)

Rover almost got involved in this thread, and then he put his bifocals on and saw that it didn't say Viagra.

Yes, it's really tiring the demands by the women on a good-looking Italian.

What, did Marcello Mastroianni once tell you about it?

He said, "Once they call you a Latin Lover you're in real trouble. Women expect an Oscar performance in bed."

Of course, my ultra lovely feisty NY mick gal pal with the huge blue eyes insists on introducing me as her Italian lover.

So I got my trial lenses tonight. They are the typical Chinese ones. The power tab is attached to a metal ring by means of a set screw. Here's a pic of them disassembled so you can see.

I mounted it in the 37mm lens holder for a varga 3000. They are ever so slightly loose when mounted. Not enough to rattle, but you can spin them in the frame. So not good for people with cylinder, but these only come in sphere anyways. If you've ever mounted lenses in a plastic frame they can pop in and out in a similar way, but don't feel like they are going anywhere in use. If you were concerned a slight dab of glue around the edges and allowed to dry would probably allow you to snug them down.

Anyhow at $2ish a lens and getting them shipped without having to make a doctor appointment gives them a thumbs up for me. I tried the +0.75 first, but playing a bit I think the +0.5 might be a bit clearer. Nice to be able to keep fiddling until I settle on what I want. If I ever do get 'real' lenses made I'll have a much better sense of what out want out of them.
