Firearm Cleaner/Lubricant Survey

I got banished to the study while my wife makes Thanksgiving dinner, and I ran across a review of gun cleaning products. I've seen hundreds of these over the years, but they almost always just tout the latest product, and don't have more than one person's unscientific opinion.

It occurred to me that there is another resource available for comparison now, which is Amazon. Out of curiosity, I did a little digging, and thought I would share the results. I've attached a quick survey of the customer reviews of nine of the top combination cleaning & lubricating products.

According to many firearm sites, Fireclean is actually overpriced Crisco vegetable oil! Right now I'm using Hoppe's 9, CorrosionX , and Mil-Comm TWB25 grease on my firearms. I also read the Amazon product comments and found some to be hilarious...LOL

^^^^^This! Synthetic 0W20 works great on every firearm I have used it on, and that includes pool guns that get abused by high round count operators! Most everything else is over-hyped marketing mumbo-jumbo.

I've used Balistol for years, and a can last forever.

There is no magic. Any detergent that removes the crud and any oil will lubricate.

Slofyr hit it on the head. Pay $5 per ounce for magic mouse milk and you may as well flush your money down the toilet.

Motor oil is fine for lubrication, but most don’t have preservatives against corrosion, and may contain chemicals that are carcinogen. Spending more on proper gun lubricants won’t make a hole through your wallet and will last a long time when you use a needle tip applicator bottle.

Hoppes #9 for cleaning, pretty well any kind of light oil for lubrication.

I know someone who destroyed his stainless revolver quite quickly - stainless steel doesn't need oiling right?

Most motor oils actually do contain rust and corrosion inhibitors.

Motor oils are a 70-80% base oil with 20-30% additives that are specifically formulated to prevent wear and tear INSIDE a car engine. However, they don’t provide the same corrosion and rust protection that are found in gun lubricants. If you think they are the same, ask any firearm manufacturer if they recommend the use of motor oils on their guns, and if any car manufacturers recommend gun oils in their cars…

Stainless WILL rust, I know, I've got a whole safe full of stainless revolvers. I had a Ruger SP101 get some rust spots years ago, and ever since then when I'm done cleaning one of my stainless revolvers I just wipe it very lightly with a little Balistol and that keeps em Purdy till the next time I pull em out (which sometimes is years) Only ones I don't wipe down is my custom Reeder Gamblers Classic .45 in high polish stainless, but that's a show gun not a shoot gun, for it I gave it an initial coat of Museum Wax which I also use on some of my original Colt six shooter collectors pieces.
