IZH-46M Chamber Lubrication

Post by Lenny »

After a decade long break I resumed shooting my IZH-46m pistol. It functioned perfectly, from what I could tell.
Last time I lubricated the chamber was 10 years ago and it was still good. I used RWS Chamber Lube. So it's time tested and I will stick with that.
My question is how to properly lubricate the chamber. In the past I just put a few drops of lube in the hole on top of the cylinder. If I am not mistaken it's an air intake hole. This was suggested to me at the time. Now I read some of the instructions from the Russian factory, which say to fully cock the pistol and apply the lube to the cup (seal?) which will emerge in the slot below the cylinder. Then fire the pistol without a pellet and to repeat this a few times. This conflicts with the manual that came with the pistol that says to avoid such firing.
So what is the right way to do it?

I lube mine by dropping a couple of drops of oil down the transfer port and a couple on the piston seal at the same time, after every tin of pellets. I usually fire it afterwards with a pellet in, although I don't think it will damage it without. I use a blunt hypodermic syringe to make getting the oil into the transfer port an easy task.

I have lubricated my FWB 103 pistol with their "special grease" from the slot below the cylinder as suggested in the manual and the same goes with my IZH46M pistol. When the lubricant is applied in the compression chamber from the cup and the pistol is fired, some of the lubricant will also be carried into the valve mechanism. I would not recommend using RWS chamber lube since it is a silicone based oil and can cause galling. You may consider Crosman pellgun oil.

The definition of galling is a severe form of adhesive wear which occurs when two metallic components slide against each other at relatively low speeds. Please tell us why the major manufacturers of silicone oil does not recommend its use in METAL TO METAL contact areas?

Silicone won't cause galling but will do little to prevent it. If you doubt it, try using a silicone lubricant on fill adaptor / cylinder threads if they both happen to be made of aluminum. Been there, done that, made me wish I had used peanut butter.

Thanks for replies. Keep it coming. I use moly slide grease on metal to metal surfaces. I tend to agree that silicon is harmless to metal, it just shouldn't be relied on to lubricate metal to metal friction. There is a warning on RWS bottle that says not to use it on trigger, barrel pivoting point and cylinder spring (the last two are not applicable).
I also read some bad things about the use of pellgun oil in the chamber. There appears to be two camps on what's better.

Simple air tool oil works just fine in a SSP. 5$ and you're set for life.

If you have not decided on what to use for chamber lube, then I would have to repeat FWB special grease. I think the "special" is a proprietary blend, probably composed of PTFE. I still have a small tube of the stuff laying around for fifteen years that I have been using to lube the internals of my SSP and PCP airpistols.

For friction areas, I use Mil-Comm TW25B grease or Guard Dog Moly 525.

I just received some silicone impregnated cloths for wiping down firearms. I was going to keep one in each air pistol / rifle case for wiping down after use. The manual says a lightly oiled cloth. Anyone see an issue with silicone for external use?

I use Anschutz special grease on Anschutz and Feinwerkbau special grease on Feinwerkbau. I'm sure they're about the same thing. I just like things to match.

That is what is recommended by the top air-gunsmith at Pyramyd Airguns for IZH's. I've been using it for a year or two on 15 IZH's for the team I help coach, and haven't had any issues.

To store them over the summer, I oil the pump seal, and run the piston in & out a few times. I fire an oiled felt pellet down the bore, and then put a drop or two down the vent to the firing seal area. You don't want to store the seal cocked, so I dry fire it once, and then leave the breech popped up, but not fully open. If you store it with barrel pointed slightly down, the oil should flow forward into the seal area.

Went to Home Depot and bought air tool oil. It was only $2.29 for 8oz bottle. Should last a life time. I will hold off on using RWS chamber lube for now and use that instead. I will use moly-slide grease on the pump linkage and TSI-301 to clean the barrel once per season. Thanks to all for comments.

Air tube oil = good one!

I've been using a small Beeman chamber lube oil for probably 20 years.
