Fitting a new seal on Steyr LP2 - HELP

I'm trying to fit a new seal to the rod that loads the pellet in the breach on a Steyr LP2.

The old one was looking worn and it popped off really easy but now I'm finding it super hard to get the new one on.

Can anyone please give me a hint on how best to go about it?

Lube it and push it on with a piece of tubing. I've also held one edge of the o-ring with my fingernail and pulled it on with a dental pick.
