Help on ideas...? High Power AR

Hi,

I want to buy my son an AR platform .223 that he can use for High Power NRA competition. It needs to have an adjustable hand stop rail and accept aperture sights like we use for small bore. He is 13 so an adjustable butt plate is necessary. I would also like to be able to put a scope on it for when we go varmint hunting. Should have a match grade barrel and trigger.

Where would I go to buy something like this? I did not see what I need at either Les Baer or Rock River. Some recommendations, please?

I would suggest getting a match rifle upper from White Oak or Compass Lake, and putting together the lower receiver group yourself.

I think Compass Lake could build the whole rifle for you but it would be less expensive if you did the lower yourself.

Why .223? I would go 6mm AR Turbo 40. Significantly better ballistics than the .223.

Thats the website of the guy who designed the round. He also has uppers.

That being said, if you must go .223, get a White Oak. They are awesome.

I checked their web sites and called them both.

Compass was great, receptionist got me to someone and he listened to what I want to do and will send me a quote later today with a few suggested options and a lead time of around 4 weeks. Very knowledgeable and understanding. Complete package.

At White Oak I talked to the lady who answered the phone. She listened to what wanted, asked if I had checked the web site and was basically clueless. I had to keep repeating what I needed and it sounded like she was running an adding machine at the same time. OK, add a match trigger... Price might be better but no help or real service there at all. She said expected lead time around 12 weeks but nothing real definite either. I suspect that there might have been someone better to speak with there.

I didn't really want to get into a discussion of caliber. I know lots like the new 6.5 Creedmore but I am wanting to keep this simple so far. If we get into 1,000 yard shooting (don't even know of a range around here) that's different, of course.

Here's a general question for the group:
Can you shoot the CMP Service Rifle Matches with an adjustable length stock or does that have to be fixed. If fixed, I probably need to wait for him to grow up a bit so it fits...

You could not shoot the CMP service rifle (or NRA service rifle for that matter) with the rifle you described earlier. It would have to be in the standard A2/A4 configuration. You can use the shorter A1 and entry style stocks, but they are fixed and not adjustable like a match rifle stock can be.

White Oak doesn't sell complete rifles so you might have confused their employee by asking questions that they normally don't deal with. It's run by John Hollinger who's one of the top service rifle shooters in the nation.

OK, so the A1 stock is fixed but shorter in length. That might do the trick for me... I have an AR Service Rifle with a Bushmaster lower. I will try and get an A1 stock for it and then he can shoot these matches as well as using the match rifle for varmint and match level matches...

Go the the National Match Competition website. It is devoted to NRA Highpower (service and match rifle) and has lots of information about highpower shooting and equipment.
