Help finding a coach
I really love shooting bullseye. While I've only been shooting for a few weeks and only competed in one match I think I'd like to find a coach to help me before I develop any bad habits.
I'm located in Portland and I've asked my local club for some suggestions which I'm looking into. I understand it's a small community (bullseye) and I'm in a small part of it (PNW) but perhaps someone knows someone who might be able to help. In my other pursuits I've found that one on one coaching really goes a long way especially at the beginning.
I've read pretty much every thing I can on the subject and try to practice twice a week and every day with the air pistol but obviously there's things you can really only learn when someone shows you. My scores are improving and I'm pretty consistenly shooting in the low 90% and sometimes better. My goal for the year was to shoot one perfect target but I did that last night (surprised myself frankly) in Rapid Fire so I want to set new goals and get help achieving them.

Thanks for the suggestion Orion - I just ordered that book on Amazon and am looking forward to it.
I love PR&PC! The people are just great and I like the range a lot. I'm shooting on their Postal Team at the moment and look forward to being on the team. They gave me some suggestions for coaches and I'm pursuing them.
I watched Zins on Top Shot and was really impressed with him and of course I'd love to take a class with him but it doesn't seem like something he does regularly. On his site it says he might have one in July, August or September. If the chance presents itself I'd try to do it.

Yes, I'll be there. Be sure to come introduce yourself and I'll look for you as well. I'll most likely be dressed in gray and I'm sporting a beard for warmth this winter but on our team I don't know if that helps... :-)
I've read every single article on bullseyepistol at least three times and on Brian Zins page at least twice. It's all in my head but I'm afraid that while I'm concentrating on doing all the right stuff (front site, breathing, smooth trigger, follow through, etc.) I'm also probably doing some things wrong that I don't realize.
Look forward to meeting you!!

Hi Orion,Orion wrote:On a similar note, check out Competitive Shooting by Yur'Yev. That and the coaching and shooting techniques of the Pistol Shooter's Treasury have been an integral part in my shooting. Competitive Shooting is about $80 on Amazon, which is well worth it. Hope this helps.
I got the book this past week and spent most of my flight home reading it. It's just amazing how much detail is in the book. I am always fascinated by the levels of dissection that something can be taken to. I'm reading it at the same time as "Zen in the Art of Archery" which is really quite fun as they represent two completely different approaches.
Thanks.
