What to do in Columbus, GA
I am going to shoot the Nationals and was wondering if there was anything for the family to do in Columbus while I was shooting. Or are they just going to be bored and I would be better off having them come down after.

Scott,
Take a look at: http://www.columbusga.com/cultural_arts_pg.htm
30 years ago there was a Six Flags amusement park on the west side of Atlanta which is not that far a drive.
Enjoy

Thanks Jack, the kids love going to the science center here in St.Louis and that looks like a good place to start. Now all we need to do is find some fireworks.
To awnser the first response my kids are 8 year old boy/girl twins and right now their interests are arguing over anything and everything they can!

This isn't too far away. I went there over 40 years ago and had fun. http://www.callawaygardens.com/ Robin Lake Beach was where we spent most of our time.
I just moved about an hour north of Columbus 3 weeks ago... there's also a "safari park" at Pine Mountain:
http://www.animalsafari.com/Wild_Animal_Safari.html
FDR's 'Little White House' and the hot springs where he stayed while working on his polio:
http://www.gastateparks.org/LittleWhiteHouse
and I believe they're doing rafting through Columbus on the Chattahoochee.
The amusement park is still out west of Atlanta, and in downtown Atlanta you have an Aquarium, the CNN building, Coke World, perhaps a baseball game, etc... ~ but Atlanta is 2~3 hours of driving, one way.

There is also the National Infantry Museum there at Fort Benning that they can check out. Our family enjoyed it very much last year.
Here is a link to their website.

We are not going this year. Our daughter's team qualified for 3P JO's so we are headed to Camp Perry.
Good luck to you, hope you do well. Enjoy your time in Georgia.

Welcome to Columbus, GA for Nationals!
Hello Scott,
I hope you, and hopefully your family, have a great time here in Columbus.
I would suggest checking out www.muscogeemoms.com which is a family oriented events website. We've got the July calendar up with several events listed already: http://www.muscogeemoms.com/calendar/july-2011/
If your family enjoys shopping, there is Columbus Park Crossing: http://columbusparkcrossing.com/
As some of the other shooters have mentioned, Callaway Gardens is really nice: http://www.callawaygardens.com/
Bare Ware Pottery is fun and my 5 & 7 year old girls enjoy going there for pottery. The owner Ursula is super nice: http://barewarepottery.com/
We also have the Columbus Museum: http://www.columbusmuseum.com/
Columbus is also home to the National Civil War Naval Museum: http://portcolumbus.org/
The Coca Cola Space and Science Center would be great for your age children, especially if they enjoy science: http://www.ccssc.org/
If your children enjoy ice skating, Columbus has a new ice rink with public skating times: http://www.columbusicerink.org/
I second the idea of the National Infantry Museum. Your kids could shoot on the simulation firing range and they have an IMAX theater within the museum with some great 3D movies playing which are reasonably priced: http://www.nationalinfantrymuseum.org/imax.cfm
I hope this helps a bit. Shoot me a message at sdlitz@bellsouth.net if you have any other questions.
