Information vs good manners

Post by 2650 Plus »

Has anyone noticed that information is now being posted by some of the real shooters in our sport? And also the dissaperence of much of the negative comments directed at a post that some may dissagre with ? I really find the change to be most welcome and believe we are getting much better information pertaining to our sport. By welcoming the posts by some of our top practioneers rather than having degrading remarks being posted that infer that the top guns will not devulge what they do to train and how they modify their equipment to improve their performance has, in the past limited their willingness to participate in this forum. The change is most welcome and I for one am very appreciative. Good Shooting Bill Horton

Yes Bill,
I had stopped posting or even looking at the site for a long time because some people were using it as an excuse to make some snide comment. Its a welcome return to good manners and the opportunity to get the oppinions and guidance from many of the top shooter. Even some of the well known a*****e's have moderated their diatribes, hope they maintain it.

Totally agree it's a refreshing phase and most of the time there are more constructive tips and advice than negative or put downs. I do however think it's a phase, and one that will undoubtedly go through the next cycle of more trash again, but I hope to be proven wrong.

Spoke to soon Bill, sadly Rob has been proved right by the insidious anti UK jibe by Richard H on the ISSF Dress Code thread.

I think it is an unfortunate reality of internet based forums where folks had hide behind the anonymity of "forum names/labels".

Besides this forum I also belong to a couple of supposedly "professional" forums where the free exchange of ideas within the profession often degenerates into needless flame wars. As a result, good posters often tire of the juvenile jibes and simply stop posting. Everybody loses.

It seems that the solution is to either only allow registered posters to use their actual names (which seems to help a little bit) - but then the community has to be quite small wherein folks actually know who you are. Or, it requires an enormous effort on the part of a team of moderators to censor and control the inflammatory rhetoric in order to keep the thread and conversation on-track, on-topic and civilized. That's a lot of work.

I learn a lot from this forum from certain posters (as I am new - well, returning after a 30 year layoff - to smallbore shooting). I hope we don't lose the benefits of the posts from top shooters.

You must be speaking about some of the new 'regulars' in this forum. It makes me wonder if these self-proclaimed experts [on both sides of the pond] actually do any shooting, or are just sitting in their rockers with a couple of books on the subject. It is a futile waste of key strokes to make a worthwhile posting and be attacked by the anal dweebs.

Over the last couple of years Target Talk has been discovered by Rimfire Central and other associations of trigger pullers and squirrel hunters. Their contributions are quite obvious and are lowering the value of this forum to those who take scored precision shooting seriously. Other than an invitation-only forum, I doubt there is much that can be done about the invasion.

I am not sure about an invasion of the forum, but I agree with Globesmasher17 that annonymity breeds contempt. I don't recall what Scott Pilkington's thinking is on on the topic (this has been raised many times before), but insisting that people sign their name to their posts would reduce the nastiness considerably. If fewer people then post, so what? On this thread alone there are very few people willing to identify themselves.

PS What is a globesmasher and are there more than 17 of you?

It might be a nice thought that we could all use our full names in forums, but given posts in blogs can be searched and details used down the track for any purpose, it makes sense to use an alias, and considering it is the information posted that is relevant, not the poster.

Posting from New Zealand where there is a "stigma" with hand guns, I don't really want my clients knowing I own and shoot pistols (I'm an Attorney) - or anyone else I choose not to tell (i.e some neighbours!), and that's why I use "Popeye". Don't take offence because I am hiding behind an alias.

I have enjoyed reading and participating in this forum and site, especially over technical issues with certain pistols that are not found in manuals, and with following ISSF trends (but not the dress code!).

Thanks for all the great posts and topics - they now provide a wealth of info we can draw on to tinker with, and pimp our pistols.

Regards

Popeye

I very much enjoy posting on this forum. My new job has forced me to give up much of my shooting time and all of my coaching time. I sadly haven't shot a match since Perry. This forum allows me to get a little of that back.

I check up on The High Road as well and TT is such a breath of fresh air afterwards. I do my best on THR to find the folks interested in precision shooting, and give them sound advice as well as point them here (in a PM) to learn and ask questions.

Something I've learned from THR: there are going to be mean/ignorant/distasteful people on every forum. Just ignore any improper posts and they won't have anything to say. They'll go away eventually.
