Greetings to all...any old friends out there?

Post by alanms »

Hello everyone,
I just recently discovered this site while doing some searching for current Anschutz models and prices(I can't believe how much they've changed!). I just wanted to take this opportunity to say "hi" to everyone. Browsing around this forum, I wish I had known about it earlier. This looks like a great place for shooters. I don't currently compete, but I did extensively from about 1978-1987 in smallbore rifle. Is anyone here from my home state of Connecticut that I may have known back then? Stratford PAL was my club, but we shot at Wallingfords Blue Trail Range often.
I've been thinking lately of dusting off my old equipment and seeing if I can still hit anything these days. Does anyone shoot in or near the central Florida area? The one range I knew of here in Daytona wasn't really geared towards competitive smallbore and it has since closed. The closest club I've heard of is in Orlando(about a 45 minute drive) I've found very little on actual competitions. Would love to get back to Perry one day. I understand the course is not 1600x4 anymore. I imagine quite a few things have changed in the last 23 years or so. Kind of feel like a dinosaur with my old gun. Anyway, I look forward to talking with you all, Thanks!

I must say that a shooter with all new eguipment really dosen't worry me as much as one with an older, but well used rifle does. Glad you are back. Good Shooting Bill Horton

Start with Central Florida Rifle and Pistol Club, SE of Orlando. They run smallbore matches like what you're looking for. I traveled down there to shoot their regional during spring break in college (and then jumped on a cruise ship the rest of the break, doesn't get much better than that). Anyways, the folks there can point you to other ranges in the area that have matches.

Hi Alan,
I shot during that period, but never made it to CT., although I threatened to go there. Did you ever make it to Muhlenburg, PA {Wilkes-Barre Rifle and Pistol Club}? I haven't shot SB rifle since the early nineties. I tried to fit in my leather jacket in the spring and I have many lbs. to lose before I could think of shooting again. I'd like to give it a try next summer.
Regards,
Ben

Hi Bill, thanks for the great welcome. Never really thought about it that way until you mentioned it. It was the "seasoned" looking shooters that always seemed to catch my attention back in the day. I feel a little better about pulling out my old 1413 now!
Soupy, thanks for the info, that does sound like a great trip! How did you make out by the way? Are you currently shooting?
Hi Ben, never made it to PA, although I did have a college team mate that was from King Of Prussia. Bob Dell was his name,He later went on to coach the team we were on at St. Johns University. Know what you mean about the old equipment, I've changed a bit over the last 23 years! I think it's terrific that you want to start up again. Are you still in PA?

I used to shoot at the Strickland Range in Daytona Beach in the 70's. I guess that is the one you said has closed. It was pretty much just a public plinking range. There was always a problem with some rounds getting out of the range back then.

I thought that Gateway R&P Club in JAX might have smallbore matches, but after looking at their website, it looks like they just host smallbore silhouette and smallbore benchrest.http://www.grpc-jax.com/Disciplines.htm
