Reaffiliating with the CMP

Post by weilers »

Hi all,

I belong to a conservation league where I shoot on our 50-Yard pistol range. The shooting sports part of our club has three camps: Trap, Action/Practical Pistol, and Benchrest Rifle.

As a Smallbore shooter, I get a lot of support out of the Action Pistol group. Just about anything I want to do, they support wholeheartedly. Long before I arrived, the club used to belong to CMP. There was a very active youth program had a shooting program, people actually stood up to shoot rifles, etc. The idea of the club rejoining the CMP has come up recently. The more I look at this, the more I see that it's going to be me in charge of the affiliation.

For me personally, CMP really doesn't offer me much. I'll occasionally do a Rimfire Sporter event, but that's about the maximum. Apart from the occasional WWII movie on TCM, Garands just don't interest me enough to make me want to purchase one. CMP affiliation might help out our youth group in the future, but the extent of our Smallbore hosting is really just a semi-annual NRA Light Rifle event.

What I'd like to know is: does anyone think reaffiliating my club with the CMP would be a significant improvement? Would it give us some kind of boost? Is it worth my while to fill out the paperwork and do this?

Is there someone on here who has worked with the CMP in the past? Is it worth it? Any advice/guidance is certainly appreciated.

I think every club should be affiliated with the CMP. It's at most only $35 I think per year. (Many youth organizations have MOUs where the cost is zero)

CMP is not just Garands .... they are the prime mover for the youth oriented 3-Position Air Rifle shooting experience.

Some Links:
CMP Homepage: http://www.odcmp.com/
3-P Home Page: http://www.odcmp.com/3P.htm
Affiliation page: http://www.odcmp.com/Clubs/Affiliates.htm

If nothing else they have a vast set of resources that they will send you ... no charge, about youth programs, safety, etc. You can spend a lot of time on their website and learn a lot about helping out "your" new youth program.

Call Erin Gestl .... he is the CMP Youth director in PA ... a great guy at the Palmyra club.
