UPDATE --- Appears to be only on the Army Contract:
Subject: RE: 887 Recalls
To: "Joel Martin"
The issue is the cylinder not screwing into the gun correctly. If the
gun was received on the Army contract in the fall of 2008 or early in
2009 these guns could be affected. We are asking all the schools to
return them to us for inspection. We will inspect them for the cylinder
alignment and those that will not line up the rifles will be repaired
and returned the units.

============================================== Daisy Outdoor Products has sent a letter out this week (Nov 17, 2009) to JROTC Instructors recalling 887 Gold medalist refles that were shipped and received in the Fall 2008 thru the Spring 2009.
We've just had to cancel one of our relays at our cup match when an Army instructor walked in with "cease & desist" orderes from his district.
If you have a match in the next few months and you use 887's, check for when you received them and take other rifles to the match.

The issue is as noted in the e-mail quoted, the cylinder alignment to the barrel. There are some rifles that the cylinder will not install on the action with the stock installed, because the female end of the action is slightly misaligned.
I just spoke with Denise at Daisy. The issue is as was said earlier, about the cylinder alignment. The cylinders will either screw into the gun or they will not. IT IS NOT A SAFETY ISSUE. Really, its not supposed to be a Recall per se, that was an over-reaction, to the onoing replacement that Daisy has been doing with the affected guns for the last few months. Daisy was trying to expedite some guns during the holidays to get minimize the impact on school shooting programs.
