25 foot air pistol training

Post by little_doodie »

I have a Izh 46m I am planning on using for training.
My plan is to shoot at both TQ-6 25' slow fire targets and TQ-9 25' international targets at home. I can't really get the full 33' I need to shoot air pistol targets safely so 25' is it.
Is the 25' going to be too short of a distance to train?
My main goal it to train for NRA conventional pistol not air pistol but if I get good enough I may give Air pistol a go.
Any thoughts on this setup?

Your plan is good. You may not be able to correlate your scores to actual match scores, but that is not really your goal.

What you are looking for is small groups in the middle of the target....that's it!

It would be nice if you actually compete in AP matches, though. Lot's of fun, it's an "in" to International Pistol, and the techniques you're practicing correlate with the matches you ARE competing in.

BTW: I (on the advice of some of the guys on here) use a 10M air rifle target at about 18' at home. The size at that distance is about right.

At that distance I simply use air-rifle (10m) targets for training. Extra ten feet isn't going to have drastic effect on group size. Just ignore the scoring rings. If you can hold the 8ring on an air rifle target at 20feet you'll do fine at 33 on the pistol target. Better than fine.

I think your on track where I am.
I am treating it as training ... that's it.
I think I may also try the 10m air pistol target too.
this should save me alot of time at the range and increase my stamina too.
I really hate holding drills so maybe if I hold and shoot my air pistol that will be all I need.
I may also try an air match someday but its not one of my priority goals.

You can use a 10m air pistol target. However I think the sight picture/bull is too large when compared to a b-8 at 25yd or the 50yd bullseye target. The 10m rifle seems closer.

Of course, you can precisely scale a target if you want to get the bull size "right".

I used to think I was a BE shooter that used 10m for practice. But that doesn't make sense when I train 10m every day and then only shoot BE on the weekends, if that.
