Rust in T200 Barrels

Post by Owen »

I have recently come accross several T200 rifles that had rust in their barrels. When they were brand new the folks pushed a dry patch through the barrel followed by a felt pellet. Only a little grease on the patch and pellet. The rifles did not shoot all that well so we decided to clean the barrels. After a wet patch with #9 (I know about the diesel effect) that removed the layer of dried oil or grease from the factory we found a lot of rust. We were able to remove the rust and polish the bore with bore bright. I have run into this problem with Tau-7 air pistols before. Has anyone else found this condition? You have to remove the grease or dried oil to get to the rust. My guess is that the oil or grease wicked the mosture to the steel and held it there.

The whole point of oil or grease is that is impermeable to water (and air) and hence it shouldn't be able to rust. I can only imagine that a) the rust was already there before greasing, or that the grease covered a layer of moisture, trapping it in.

All that said, if I bought a new gun that had any rust in it it would be immediately returned for replacement. New guns should be rust free.

T22's with bad barrels

A short time ago I recieved an air arms 200 that I could not get a decent group out of for the same reason .I contacted our host, talked to the gunsmith and he advised a barrel change I am sure you may have considered this solution , Let me recommend the solution I used as the barrel I recieved from pilkguns solved the problem. It is a very simple act to change the barrel. Good Shooting Bill Horton
