U.S. Shooters Add Four Medals to 2009 ISSF World Cup Medal Tally in Munich
MUNICH, Germany (May 18, 2009) – The USA Shooting team won four medals at the ISSF World Cup in Munich, Germany in the past two days with Josh Richmond taking home the gold in Men’s Double Trap, while Matt Emmons and Michael McPhail claimed the silver and bronze respectively in Men’s 50m Prone Rifle. Keith Sanderson grabbed the bronze in Men’s 25m Rapid Fire Pistol.
U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit (USAMU) member Richmond (Hillsgrove, Pa.) won the first medal for the U.S. on Sunday when he captured the gold in Men’s Double Trap. Richmond entered the final in second place with 145 targets and shot 43 targets in the final to jump into first place with a total of 188 out of 200 targets. The silver medal went to the 2000 Olympic Champion Richard Faulds of Great Britain with 187 (143+44) hits. Rashid Al-Athba of Qatar grabbed the bronze medal with 187 (144+43) hits. Richmond’s USAMU teammate and 2008 Olympian Jeff Holguin (Yorba Linda, Calif.) finished in fifth place with 185 targets.
Two-time Olympian Emmons (Browns Mills, N.J.), who is the Olympic gold medalist in Men’s Prone from Athens, as well as the silver medalist from Beijing took home the silver today in his first ISSF World Cup of the season finishing in second place with 702.0 points. Emmons was in sixth place going into the final with 597 and climbed up the scoreboard to finish second after shooting an excellent final of 105.0. USAMU member McPhail (Darlington, Wis.), who is fresh off a bronze medal win at the World Cup in Beijing, claimed his second medal of the season, finishing right behind Emmons in third place with 701.0 points to grab the bronze.
Guy Starik of Israel, who is world record holder in Men’s Prone, won the gold with a total score of 703.3 points.
Keith Sanderson (San Antonio, Texas), a 2008 Olympian captured his third ISSF World Cup medal in 2009 in the Men’s 25m Rapid Fire Pistol event today. Sanderson shot a score of 585 in the qualification to enter into the final in third place. He kept his third place position shooting 195.0 points in the final round for a total of 780.0 points to earn the bronze. Sanderson won the silver at the Changwon, Korea World Cup in April and also captured the gold in at the Beijing, China World Cup one week later.
Germany’s Christian Reitz, won the gold in Men’s Rapid Fire today with a total score of 785.3 points. Martin Strnad of the Czech Republic won the silver medal with 780.2 points.
Competition at the 2009 ISSF World Cup in Munich will continue on Tuesday with the Women’s 50m 3 Position Rifle event, as well as the Men’s 10m Air Pistol and Women’s Skeet events. The World Cup will conclude on Wednesday with Women’s 10m Air Pistol, Men’s 50m 3 Position Rifle and Men’s Skeet.
