MAJ David Cloft of the USAR Service Rifle Team featured in the ALPENA News of Alpena, Michigan. Alpena native finds tremendous success as a marksman - By CHRIS DOBROWOLSKI. You can feel it from the moment David Cloft starts talking about shooting a rifle. It oozes out of him, as if it consumes him. It doesn't matter if he's describing the first time he went to a shooting range as a 10-year-old. Or the time when he became the first American in more than 600 years to win an annual Schutzenfest competition in Germany - an honor that got him knighted by Princess Elizabeth von Ysenburg. You could also include all the target practices, the competitions, or simply the feeling of squeezing a trigger and nailing a target that could be as far away as 1,000 yards. Columbus State University Adds NCAA Rifle Program - Columbus State University in Columbus, GA announced in early December that it will add four new athletic programs for the 2009-2010 school year, one of those being a Co-Ed Varsity Rifle Team. This is exciting news for both the NCAA rifle program and for high school athletes in Georgia, where Rifle is a high school varsity sanctioned sport. North Georgia College and State University is the only other NCAA shooting program in the State of Georgia. As a result, many of state’s top shooting athletes have to venture to other parts of the country to pursue college shooting careers. The new team will practice and compete in Army Marksmanship Unit’s (AMU) International Shooting Range at Fort Benning, which is only a few miles away from the University’s campus. This will give CSU’s athletes the unique opportunity to train and compete on one of the best electronic shooting ranges in the country. Heading the program will be CSU staff member Mike Green who has served as Athletic Facilities Coordinator for the last four years, and Sergeant First Class Mike Moore of the AMU. For more information about CSU athletics go to www.csucougars.com, or visit the University’s website at www.colstate.edu.
