USAS Nationals & Olympic Tryout

Post by Bill Poole »

I am trying to figure out what the schedule of events for the USAS Nationals is this year. I am new to this type of shooting and want to attend the Nationals and other events.
Is the USAS National Championships the same event as the olympic tryout?
Would a half-blind convert from service rifle, shooting mostly 8's and 9's, be laughed off the line?
I will probably be looking for someone to share a room & rental car with from 23-may till 31 may or so. (prone rifle & AP, an odd combination).
Also,
The USA Shooting website, at http://www.usashooting.com/Schedules/ShootSchedule.cfm? lists
"US Team Selection, Nationals, and World Matches"
Will there be a World Cup? ("world matches" mentioned in the heading above)? I REALLY want to attend a WC (as a spectator would be OK first time or two) I had heard there would be, but ISSF lists no WC in US and our local olympian says there will not be.
Thanks,

No, separate events.

Nobody is going to laugh. You might be on second relay, though.

This is a good place to try and find a roommate.

No World Cup in the USA this year. You have to be on National Team, and then have the National Coach pick you to shoot in a World Cup.

Nope. I finished third from last in both AP and FP and nobody said anything. I even got $50 for being first in AP class B, lucky there were only two of us in that class. I learned a whole lot and it was the most fun I've ever had in competitive shooting, not least because after the match was done, a few more bucks bought a whole afternoon of training on a world-class range.

Bruce and I roomed together at the Fall Selection and would probably do that again if he goes to the Spring, but if he doesn't, I might could do that for the AP match, although I would be driving my own car.

Not this year, and like Eric U says, it's not easy to get to shoot in an actual WC. Check www.issf-shooting.org for definitive WC schedules all over the world. Once in awhile they'll have spare "Grand Prix" slots where ordinary shooters get to compete for fun alongside the world-class folks but this is very rare. BUT, go see a WC the next time they're in the US. As we all know, shooting is not a spectator sport unless you have someone to root for. Here, no prob, root for our friends on the National Team. You can also chitchat with real live Team members who are glad to give you pointers, which is not the case with all Olympic sports. I got to see the last day of the 2002 WCs at Wolf Creek, including the rifle finals where Matt Emmons won us the gold. I well remember the audible gasp of disbelief when he threw a 6 on the last shot, but since his qual score was so high, I also well remember facing the podium and "presenting arms" while the US National Anthem played. That was fun, as was using some of my mostly-forgotten college Chinese with a couple of the PRC shooters, great guys all.
