Recommendation for a cross-trainer air pistol

Hello,

I'm somewhat embarrassed to ask this, as I should know the answer. However, I've learned that "I don't know" is a pretty powerful phrase.

I have a relative who recently got into PRS (Precision Rifle Series? I think it's that discipline with running around with rifles and shooting targets at unknown distances. Not 100% clear on that.)

I told him, sight unseen, that his trigger control sucks and that shooting air pistol would be the best training aid he could do. (I've seen a lot of rifle shooters in my day and unless they come from silhouette, their trigger control sucks, and they have no concept of shooting within an arc of movement. Conversations with him indicated as much.)

Is the Steyr EVO10 the successor to the LP10? It's a little spendy at $2,400, but I could possibly talk him into "buy once cry once." Used is definitely a good option, and I will keep my eyes out for those.

I have not had great experiences with the AirArms PCP pistols, so I'm looking for some options to recommend to him somewhere in between that price point and a top-of-the-line Olympic grade AP. That covers a lot of ground.

Recommendations appreciated!

One of the best 'training' air pistol is the FAS 6004 - successor to the legendary FAS 604. Not only is the 6004 great to learn trigger control, sight alignment, follow through etc with, it is also very attractively priced.

A Hammerli AP20 is about the third the cost of a Steyr, and is a pretty decent entry level air pistol. You need a SCUBA tank or a pump to fill either one. The AP20 can be upgraded down the road with nicer grips & a cylinder with a gauge if desired.

No reason not to go cheap. He's not heading for the Olympics.

I think everyone here knows I'm hot for SSPs, but there are lots of quality cheap CO2 guns floating around.

He could have a world class gun for cheap.

Cheap! Luv it!

Yeah, keeping my eyes open for a deal. I do know what to look for, with the added bonus that my cousin also has been into SCUBA diving, so PCP gun might not be quite so prohibitive as it would be for a complete novice.

My gut reaction (woefully outdated) was “spend $1800 on a Steyr LP10. Buy once, cry once.”

Shows how long it’s been since I’ve been in the market.

Wow JB, you're an old fart!

You got me beat. I checked and I've been here 19 years. I started under the name "roger v", but switched to "Rover" a year or so later.

They still haven't learned I'm "just foolin'".

I was 15 years old in 1992 and you were an Olympic medalist.

Neither you nor I are teenager Olympic medalists like Kim Rhode.

Thus you're definitely "older" than I am :D
