i have several questions. im 21 and want to get my first handgun. I have shot a few different ones growing up and lots of rifles and shotguns. I want a big gun, like a .45 caliber. I live the desert eagle .50 too. I want one with excellent accuracy and lots of power. I have a budget of about $1000 for one. What do you recommend. Accuracy is my main concern. I want to be a good marksman. Also distance and power is number 2. What is the difference between chrome plating and nickel plating. WHat is the difference between a nine millimeter or .45?

Ummmmmmm I think you are on the wrong forum!
This group is dedicated to extremely high quality/accuracy olympic grade target pistols and rifles.
The OBVIOUS answer to your question is: get a Morini CM162ei and a Pardini SP.
But I don't think that is the answer you were expecting.
From the point of view of this group, I'd say, find you local ISSF/USAShooting affiliated club that runs ISSF style matches (if you are in Phoenix email me!) OR an NRA affiliated club that runs conventional "Bullseye" pistol matches, go watch a match or two, meet the folks, see if this is what you want to get into. Hang around for a while and you will figure out what to buy.
Serious formal competion is EXTREMELY challenging and demanding and might even be satisfying... IF you like it, if you don't, it can be as boring as sin....
There are dozens of other handgun competitions IPSC (practical pistol, quick-draw, rapid fire) to Silhouette (lying on your back shooting a steel ram at 200yds). And for many, just plinking is fun.
Find a local club (I mean club, not commercial business) find out what they do there and if it interests you, here in Phoenix the IPSC and Cowboy-dress-up games draw over a hundred participants each week, (vs fewer than 10 in the olympic style games less often).
Or go to the local indoor range (usually a business) they will have guns to rent, so you can try out a variety of stuff in your quest for what is fun and feels good...
Read the popular gun magazines, you already get the "American Rifleman", right? there are about a dozen others on the newstands... they are entertaining...
Checkout the rec.guns newsgroup forum.... its VERY general in nature, your question gets asked there about once a week... look for online archives...
good shooting..

PS Actually the Browning or Ruger .22 with target sights might be the best choice, for under $300 you could participate in olympic style standard pistol, sport pistol, NRA .22 bullseye, smallbore silhouette and massacre tin cans with cheap ammo to your heart's content...
if you MUST get a real gun first... I subscribe to the philosophy that have been no advances in handgun technology since 1911 (the year the .45 came out).

Re: my first hand gun
Since yuo are interested in becoming a good marksman, I would recommend you lookinto the various types of pistol competitions. Participating in competitions is a great way to learn from other shooters and it gives you plenty of modivation to practice. NRA Bullseye is one example. There are plenty of sites on the web that can explain Bullseye and other competitions. Try the NRA web site for shooting.
Once you decide what you want to do with the pistol, then you can decide which pistol to get. Generally you can look at the better competetors and see what they shoot.

What is the difference between chrome plating and nickel plating. WHat is the difference between a nine millimeter or .45?
Oops I didn't answer all your questions.
does anyone still PLATE guns? chrome used to be shiny, nickel less so, either was less prone to rust than blue. I don't think either is used much as all anymore
silver color handguns are almost all Stainless Steel now.
.45 bullet is .45" (~11mm) 9mm bullet is 9mm (.356")
.45 is used in CMP service pistol, NRA bullseye, IPSC and others.
9mm can be used (ONLY in the beretta M92/M9) in CMP service pistol and IPSC etc.
if you buy cheap ammo by the case 9mm is cheaper
the gunsmiths know more about making a M1911 in .45 shoot accurately than any other gun.
good shooting

Re: my first hand gun
As long as you have a budget of around $1000, why get just one?
I suggest a good used 1911 based gun. A Kimber would be best, as they probably have the best fit and finish out of the box. If you're thinking about ever shooting practical pistol AKA IPSC competitions, I'd HIGHLY recommend you look at the STi guns. They're based on the Colt 1911 design, but accept high capacity magazines.
With a little luck and some smart shopping, hopefully you'll have enough left over to buy a Bob Marvel .22 caliber conversion kit. Why? Good cheap practice and very accurate to boot (1.5" groups at 50 yards ain't bad).
Just about anyone on here will tell you that there's nothing wrong with shooting .22 and it's probably the best caliber to shoot if you have little experience. Less recoil and lower costs mean you get plenty of practice without picking up bad habits like flinching and jerking (which I often see a lot of in people who start with larger calibers).

Re: my first hand gun
Lots of questions. For distance (200 yards or more), accuracy and power go with a bolt action in 308. To learn to shoot well start with an air pistol and learn the basics until you can hold the black every single shot without question. There are a bunch of places in between those two extremes to stop and enjoy pistol shooting. I like them all! If time and money weren't in the way I would do more shooting. : i have several questions. im 21 and want to get my first handgun.
