SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic – After the second
day of competition at the 2003 Pan American Games,
two-time Olympian Lance Bade finished the men’s trap
qualification rounds Sunday in second place. He was
two points behind the leader Rodrigo Bastos from
Brazil, who had only missed one target in 125 shots.
However, Bade (Colorado Springs, Colo.) is never one
to be counted out. The 1996 Olympic bronze medalist
still had 25 shots in the finals to make up the
difference, a difficult but plausible task, especiall
for Bade. And while Bastos started strong, Bade
finished it, hitting all 25 targets and claiming the
gold by one.
"I was just reading the targets right," Bade said. "I
had a feeling about where it would be coming and I
read it dead on."
The U.S. had already secured both of its available
quota’s in the Men’s Trap discipline, but it still
holds the same amount of pressure for some.
Chris Kiernan, also of Colorado Springs, Colo., had
been training extremely hard for the last few months
for this competition, but couldn’t get a grasp on his
mistakes and finished in eighth.
“I was trying to do everything I know of to correct my
shot.I just must not know enough yet. Bade will take
the gold though,” Kiernan said before the match. “Bade
has just been so on durning these last couple of days.
He is really hitting clean shots. It would be hard to
find someone who has his talent and experience.”
Bade’s gold medal marks his third win in three
consecutive Pan American appearances. Up next for the
Shotgun Team will be the Women’s Trap competition
starting at 9 a.m. on Monday, with finals and award
ceremonies to follow.
