Well ... THAT was humbling.

Post by prowling »

My first standing position rifle score for record in over 30 years. As a former smallbore 3p and highpower competitor, I figured I would shoot in the low/mid-80s.

The rifle itself is obviously not at fault: a mint-condition old FWB C60 that I picked up for a song recently, to use for testing the InBand Electronic Scoring Target system (www.InBand.us). BEAUTIFUL rifle, seriously. With a lovely trigger, and great looks and ergonomics for me, at least. The pellets are equally beyond reproach, being from a lot of RWS R-10 that were all weighed and sized back in the day for match shooting.

Regardless, this 76 represents my BEST string out of 4 attempts—and I'm pleading the 5th on the other scores.

Holy Hell ...

I suspect you could get back to your previous form if you choose to put in as much effort as you did back in the day.
The fact you are shooting in the standing position is a testament to your resolve. Give it a bit for the mind and reflexes to get back in sync.

I've just started shooting 10m air rifle recently at home to practice offhand during winter. So far my personal best is a 72 on issf targets. Seems I shoot rifle worse than pistol.

I to recently came back to air rifle as well as pistol.
My old average in SB Offhand was 91/100 in an adult league I shot in in SF area back in the 1990's.
Managing an 82 average right now but only shoot SB every couple of months. Mostly concentrating in AP.

Don't feel too bad. People can have endless discussions about this but I think that 10 meter air rifle is the most difficult rifle discipline I have ever shot. Yes you don't have wind and elements and distance to deal with but that little dot in the middle of the target has some kind of force field around it! No matches around here now but when I broke 500 I was absolutely thrilled! I really miss the 10 meter matches in the winter and of course right now we have zero shooting of any kind. Practice does help a little.
