Separate Background check for FT. BENNING?

Post by atomicgale »

Does anyone know:

Is there a separate background check to enter Ft. Benning for the pistol trials in late February?

(By "separate" - I mean in addition to the background screening by USA Shooting? Does the military run their own check?)

Thanks!

From their Visitor website page.
And yes you do have to do this. Note here in New Mexico with an old type ID it's a real pain, but you can get in --- may take more than 10 min <grin>
(I probably ought to bite the bullet & get the new "Real ID" or whatever they call it now.... damn)
They check for visitorpass & ID of all the folks in the vehicle w/ you
===================================================================================================
To request an access pass to post, you can go to the Fort Benning Visitor Control Center at the Interstate 185, Contractor Visitor Control Center on 8th Division Rd. in Harmony Church or submit a request via fax. If you go to one of the Visitor Control Centers, the process will take approximately 10 minutes per person, so please allow for extra time when making travel plans.

By requesting a pass, you are agreeing to a background check, which uses the National Crime Information Center Interstate Identification Index (NCIC-III), a Federal Bureau of Investigation database that provides criminal histories from all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Be aware that all individuals 18 and older in the vehicle are required to have a background check and pass before being allowed to unescorted access to the installation.

For the Fall Selection Matches, USA Shooting sent out a link for the Visitor Pre-Registration System. I believe this is the Army background check.

You fill out your information in the system in advance and they have it on hand. When I got there, I just walked into the visitor center, put my ID in the reader with my SSN and it gave me a pass in just a few minutes.

And yes, the Real ID, was a pain for some folks. I was talking to a gentleman who go stuck there for a half hour.

What is the "REAL ID"?

I've never heard the term.

Snicker - another "we're from the govt & we're here to help" program:
https://www.dhs.gov/real-id-public-faqs
Passed by Congress in 2005, the REAL ID Act enacted the 9/11 Commission's recommendation that the Federal Government “set standards for the issuance of sources of identification, such as driver's licenses.” The Act established minimum security standards for state-issued driver's licenses and identification cards and prohibits Federal agencies from accepting for official purposes licenses and identification cards from states that do not meet these standards. These purposes are:

Accessing Federal facilities
Boarding federally regulated commercial aircraft
Entering nuclear power plants
15 years to put into place...???...

That surprises me. Any DOD facility should take a CAC card over anything else.

They wanted the CAC & DL at the gate and my DL failed the Real ID .... even though it's supposed to be OK until Oct 2020.

It's a "Common Access Card" and is issued to government employees, both military and civilians, as a tool to access computer systems, etc.
