Pellet performance vs cost

I learned a very expensivde lesson today which I would like to share.

A local gunshop owner was an Olympic hopeful in International Rapid Fire event. During my last visit I had my Steyr LP-5 with me and he commented how it was used by the participants at the Olympic Training Center for indoor practise of IRF. I metioned that I had purchased an EVO-10 as I found flyers in 5 shot groups. He challenged my assumption that it was either the gun or the pellet.

He stated that at the OTC they shot inexpensive pellets out of LP-5's and did not notice any significant performance difference between the inexpensive and expensive pellets. Noticing the look on my face he quickly set up a target at 50 ft. put the LP-5 in a padded vice and had me shoot a 5 shot group with RWS Hobby pellets - one perfectly round hole the diameter of a pellet.

Lesson learned. Problem was the operator not the machine !

I recently switched to the Crosman 7.4 grain wadcutters in the bulk milk cartons. Less than a penny per shot, and they group better than I can shoot in all 5 of my airguns.

I will never be in the Olympics, so why waste my money on more expensive pellets. If I ever get better than my cheap pellets, I may revisit this issue.

Same here, did a few test with the air rifle and pistol, no noticeable difference in Group size between H&N Sport VS Final Match at 10M, had similar results with RWS Hobby VS Meisterkuglen... So I use H&N Hobby, they are relatively inexpensive and easy to get by the sleeve.

This been said, if/when I'm driving to a match, I'll still switch Final Match... just for that added peace of mind ;-)

Those are the pellets I give out for shooters at our air pistol matches. Last year Mens senior second place was won by someone shooting these pellets.

Hello-

When shooting my Morini 162EI, I find that RWS Hobby pellets work best, of all. I belive it has something to do with the widely flared skirt. No real evidence. I can say, though, I have tried every pellet available from a reputable manufacturer, and the Hobby's work the best, for the money.

Remember that airpistols of the same make and model (each barrel rifling is unique) may show different accuracy results, try a tin and see if YOUR pistol likes them or not.

I was given H&N Finale Match heavy pellets. I tested them in my LP1 and the groups were CRAP (I was getting exceptional accuracy with Basics at the time). I figured, "what the hell." and cranked up the gun to "11." Great accuracy!

Go figure.

I am shooting these now and they work great. I wish Vogel Oranges were still available.

I shot RWS basics last year and didn't like lead glitter (tiny lead chips) they were leaving all over.The price was good and they shot ok from what I can tell. They certainly didn't hold me back, but they were too messy to use. I am shooting RWS Musterkugelen this year. Will switch to R10's as I get close to my yearly sectional match. Air pistol is my secondary interest, which I shoot during highpower rifle off-season.
