200 yard smallbore

Post by 40xguy »

Does anyone know what the correction is for smallbore shooting, which is 22 LR, when going from 100 yards to 200 yards? Ammo used would be Eley Match, Lapua Center X, or something similar. Thanks.

This might help. I know it is just "working folk's" ammo, but....

18 minutes with SK Rifle Match (but our range is slightly uphill, and at 5200 feet).

Angles of Elevation from the 'Smallbore Rifle Handbook' by Col Townsend Whelen, 1937:

For .22 LR standard velocity 1100 FPS, 40 gr

Range (yd)............MOA
0...........................0
25........................3.4
50........................7.1
100.....................15.1
200.....................33.0

So the "come-up" from 100 to 200 yards is 17.9 MOA. I've found this data will get you close to center.

Whelen's angles of elevation go from 0 to 300 yards in 25 yard increments. The angle of elevation for 300 yards is 53.7 MOA. However, I cannot vouch for his 300 yard data.

This book is interesting. I wondered why the early US rimfire target rifles were magazine fed repeaters. Come to find out prior to WW2 smallbore competition often included rapid fire and sustained fire events. In addition, the smallbore National Match Course included a 200 yard stage.

Whelen's 'Smallbore Rifle Handbook' can often be found on Abebooks at https://www.abebooks.com/

Many out of print and scarce books can be found there.
