I can get into a winter air rifle league for something to do that season. Problem is I am retired and have limited funds for equipment. I do have an inherited somewhat recent RWS 54 .177 rifle to shoot but it needs different sights for target work. Any comments or suggestions. I see there are a number of iron sights available from the inexpensive Daisy to bigger buck German sights. Problem is what would fit or could be made to fit. Accuracy of the 54 is better than I am capable of holding so under the circumtances, with proper sights and pellet selection it should be fun to shoot although at fairly high velocities even with a heavy pellet.

You may be better off getting one of the refurbished Daisy 853/753 from the CMP. They are accurate, and probably cost less than a set of sights for the RWS.

The Diana 54 is also a relatively high power rifle. Even here in the UK it runs at around 800 fps in .177" caliber. In the US it is probably running at closer to 900 fps. This power level will destroy the targetry that is used for most 10m match shooting in very few shots. The Normal limit for a match rifle is around the 5 Joule limit of German rifles, or about 600 fps. The wadcutter/diabolo pellets used for match shooting start to loose stability at velocities much above this anyway. At least in the US you have the CMP which seems to give a cheap entry to match shooting in all it's forms, with discounted guns and of course running competitions as well. I think that the suggested rifle from the CPM would be your best option for shooting in a league at 10m. Save the Diana 54 sporter for sporting targets.
