Lapua X-act
Does anyone know how come the X-act cost twice as much as the best ammo from other brands, and also including the midas? 50 cents+ per round....I just bought one box just want to see what difference does it make.
FYI I always use Eley Tenex for training, and Eley Sport for fun. I did try Midas before.

No idea, but it's almost certainly a waste of money for pistol. I only use eley match in rifle and that groups well enough for me. Even in free pistol the 10 ring is 20-times larger so that absolute accuracy isn't needed, unless you're a 570+ free pistol shooter - in which case you probably wont be paying for it :)

I'd expect they will be charging more because they believe people will pay for it.

The rep from Lapua at the SHOT show expected pricing to be 20-25% higher than anything else out there. He also said that the people testing the ammo (real compitition shooters) have been seeing group reduction of 30-50%. That’s impressive if true. - See more at: http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2008 ... x0GhG.dpuf

It's presumably a combination of what the market will take and also yield from manufacturing. If they're making lots of X-Act, testing it, and only say 20% is making it through for sale and the rest is going for recycling, then you have to cover the cost of all that ammo in the 20% you sell.
In the case of Eley, Team, Match and Tenex all three come off the Tenex loading machines and anything that fails the stringent consistency and quality requirements to get it's Red Tenex label gets downgraded to Match/Team or ultimately recycling if they have a bad batch, so if they're having a bad patch and yielding a lot of Team and not much Tenex it's not a dead loss.
Depending on what Lapua do with reject X-Act (whether it's rebadged or just scrapped?), their costs may be higher or lower.
It's probably mostly what the market will take. Federations will buy the most expensive ammo if it genuinely does test the best through their shooter's barrels, because there's no point supporting them and taking them to comps if they're going to buy the ammo that came out second best in batch testing just because it's cheaper!
For the rest of us though, it's more than we'll ever be able to justify!

Eley Tenex for training?! Whoa, glad you have a mountain of solid gold in the back yard...conradin wrote:...

I think I am freaking out right now. I try to chalk it up to psychology..(I paid a whole lot more for X-act of course this is going to happen). I am shooting grouping of 8 for X-act versus 4 for Tenex. Maybe it is psychology? The X-act cannot possibly be THAT much better. I did not do batch testing (cannot afford it obviously).
I just want to knowi if it is possible that the only reason of the "superior" result from using the X-act is that my CM84E LIKES X-act, not because X-act is better. I heard that each pistol has its own liking, regardless of brand and "quality".
I DO feel the difference between the two models when I fire. There is clearly a difference in the ratio of incendiary element and primer, and who knows what the formula of these two. Of course the lubricant is different...
It seems to be that most people do agree about the best .22LR is Olymp-R, which is no longer in production.
I also use midas, and it has around the same result as the Tenex, but I did not fire enough Midas to reach any conclusion.
Advice please?
