Ruger MKIII (or a MKII if you can find one). Built like tanks, lots and lots of spare parts and after market accessories, will eat just about any ammo, it's capable of being upgraded to a target gun capable of excellent accuracy and best of all it can be had for $400 or less.

Best all around gun hands down bar none

For what exactly ? And posting in the 'pistol' forum might have got a better response.

I would recommend a revolver or automatic, you can't miss with either.

To expand slightly on Spencer's, Chris's and Rob's answers, the reason that there is no all-round pistol (without some specification) is not just that no single model is good enough, it's that different shooting sports have different rules and no single model is legal in all of them. To shoot all ISSF events, you'll need three different pistols (and with less than four, your equipment will be sadly uncompetitive in one of the events). To shoot Bullseye, you'll need two different pistols, at least one of which you don't already own for ISSF, and will probably want three. Etc.

By the way, there is ample anecdotal evidence that it's perfectly possible to miss with both revolvers and autos. :)

To put an end to this suspiciously Troll posting; I'd like to say that I have never

seen a circle shaped pistol.
