IZH 46-M Malfunctioning

I purchased a used IZH 46-M and it worked well when I first got it. It started acting up. When I would pump it and get it ready to fire then pull the trigger it would only make a small noise and not move the pellet. I would only lift the lid where the pellet is and try to refire and it would not fire. I would have to pump it again then it will usually fire. It is doing this more often. I recently replaced all of the rubber seals and parts. Cleaned it and retried it and it is still doing the same thing. Has anyone seen this and does anyone have a suggestion or solution? Thanks Bill

I assume you oiled the main piston? I was having trouble and after a breakdown and clean the same problem went away.

Billspin;

Sounds like you are short stroking it.
To avoid this, this was my routine while firing the Izzy.

I know that if used as per the instructions, you move the cocking lever/pump all the way forward and this released the bolt and took in air in one fell swoop.
Forget it.

Release the bolt, pull bolt all the way back to cock it.
Grab the underlever and go full stroke forward(you will hear a sucking noise.
Now return the cocking lever while feeling resistance.
Insert pellet and close the bolt.
Should fire.

Let me know how it works using this routine.

Houngan - I am assuming that you are referring to part #9 in the attached photo when you mention the Main Piston.

C.Perkins - I have been doing almost exactly what you described. Except for opening the bolt up completely and cocking it. I have just been releasing it then letting the cocking motion finish opening it the rest of the way. I will try it as you described and let you know. I do hear the sucking noise. So this is normal?

Thanks to both of you for the advice and help.

the sucking noise of the forward stroke of the cocking lever is normal and upon closing the cocking lever, there should be some resistance...

When you normally cock the lever all the way, does the loading latch pop up all the way by itself and what type of lube are you using?

kevinweiho - Yes the latch does open all of the way up by itself. I am using RWS Chamber Lube in the little hole for the Main Piston and Tim McMurray MAC 1 Secret Sauce on all of the rubber parts.

I have removed parts 17, 9, and 13 cleaning them and lubing them. I put it all back together and then left the grips off and tested the gun. It worked for a couple of times then it failed. What I discovered is that when it malfunctions a little puff of air is pushed back out towards the rear of the gun. I re-pump it close the cover and it fires. Does this sound like I should replace the parts 17, 9 and 13?

No, #16, the main piston. As someone else mentioned the stroke could be the issue but I've found a thorough cleaning of the piston seal and the piston chamber, along with a drop of oil wiped around the seal, makes everything tight as a drum. I've never done anything beyond working the cocking handle fully and have no issues with the charge. I just work the handle, insert the pellet, and drop the "bolt" and it works.

Your IZH 46M may not be malfunctioning; I had the same problem which was caused by slightly over sized pellets.

I had the same problem, If the pellets were too tight it would not get expelled. What I did was extend the piston to increase the compression. There is an explanation about adjusting the piston on the yellow by Steve/NC but he is explaining the procedure for installing the Innova mod for the izzy just use the part where he explains about the piston.

I cannot believe that "oversized" pellets would not get out of the barrel.

There is something not right with your gun. If you can't fix it (sounds like you're making a good try), get someone who can.

I seemed to have solved the problem that I originally posted about. I unscrewed the piston a 1/4 turn at a time, re-assembled it, then tried it. I repeated this process until I finally got a setting that allowed the pistol to function correctly without any misfires. Thanks everyone for the input, I did stumble upon some good info about this pistol during the investigation about this problem. Bill
