ISSF sling setup question

I am primarily a pistol shooter in competition, but have recently picked up an Anschutz 1403 rifle with which to learn the basics of 3P shooting. I just picked up a Gehmann 40mm ISSF sling off this forum.
I've fiddled around with it for a while, and I THINK I have it set up correctly. It's a little different than the M1907 sling I've used before. Can anybody point me to a web resource on how to correctly set up an ISSF sling? I've tried Googling, and so far haven't come up with anything. A youtube video would be great, but an NRA publication or other website would be great.
Thanks,
-John

CMP has some article and videos on their website. Here is the link>>>>>>
http://odcmp.com/Training/CoachingResources.htm Under smallbore and position air rifle shooting.
Also there are some very good books out, "Ways of the Rifle" is probably the best. Good luck.

MEC's Ways of the Rifle is a great book, to be sure, but for rifle newbies I actually prefer Steps to Success: Rifle Shooting by Launi Meili. I found Ways of the Rifle a bit overwhelming when I started shooting rifle, but the Steps to Success book was much easier to digest.
As for sling setup, the ISSF slings are much easier to rig (usually) than the M1907 slings, at least they are for me. On your Gehmann sling, the part with the buckle holes goes to the rifle, and the part without them goes around your arm. The arm cuff of the sling is cut on an angle so that it will lie flat on your arm when you're in position. As you probably remember from your time with an M1907, the sling should be tight, and it should be pulling from the center of your arm. Both Steps to Success and Ways... have much more information on what it should feel like and where it should hit your hand, arm, etc.
Good luck!

Thank you the thoughtful posts. I certainly appreciate it!
I've already started to check out the CMP website. I had no idea there were so many resources there. I will also check out the books suggested.
One further question: on the rail on the underside of my rifle, where should I put the sling swivel/handstop? I mean, how far forward should I have it adjusted?
I have a round, sort of stunted handstop with a swivel in front of it.
Thanks,
-John

You should put the handstop where ever it is comfortable for you. There is no one formula to fit every one.
http://riflemansjournal.blogspot.com/20 ... stock.html is a good place to start, but tweaking your equipment will take some time and lots of trial and error.

Thanks again! This is spot on what I need!
I appreciate your input on fiddling with the adjustments until they suit me. Now that I'm just getting started in a new discipline, I want to hear what the experts have to say to save a lot of time fiddling around.
Again, thanks!

Years ago Bob Foth wrote an article while he was at CMP.

That's a great link!!!
Very interesting about most jacket sling hooks holding the sling to low. I have wondered about this because I am getting a pulse through the sling on my new jacket.
