How to grip with high thumb/index web?

It is been said that good grip is 50% of shooting.

We have been taught to grip with a "high" thumb/index web contact.

I have been achieving this high contact by placing web high, while my left hand on barrel is putting upward pressure.

I have been re-gripping with every shot with this habit for a long while.

Recently, it dawn on me that I might be doing this all wrong.

I should be achieving "high" web by pressing barrel downward, not upper ward!

I have been shooting more precisely with this barrel downward high web space hold.

I am not sure if my better shooting is coming from better grip , or a newer grip sensation and has in fact no bearing on barrel upward or downward pressure.

So, what is you take on achieving this high thumb/index web space grip? Apply barrel pressure upward or downward?

I'm certainly no expert but I gave this some thought today while simultaneously pondering how to go about combatting my nose heavy AP. I often notice as I'm holding on target, that my front sight will, at times, slowly dip down. I tried what you describe as I place the pistol into my hand, pushing into my right hand and somewhat down with the barrel. Very promising initial results. Like you I was sort of lifting the barrel upwards when I took my grip, which seems to have created an opportunity if not gripped very firmly to "fall" to where gravity takes it. I'll keep testing this. Makes sense though - if you set/grip with the barrel as low as it can go in your hand, it can't slip down any lower. Thanks for the idea, especially if it's not a fluke and provides consistent results!

Can I suggest you take a look at the ISSF academy, they have a great piece on gripping (they list it as 'right hand position') - I think it's page 7.

Not sure I understand you, or you are overcomplicating it.

Holding the barrel in the left hand you feed the grip into the hand; web first then into heel of hand and lastly close fingers. Barrel should not be pushed up or down as the hand should fit snugly into the grip. It sounds like the grip doesn't fit you very well if pushing up or down makes a big difference.
