I have an Anschutz hat that I use for prone shooting but everytime I get into position and put my head on the cheek piece, the sights lift the hat off my head where it balances like a pimple on a haystack, and then falls off.

I have been thinking of getting the Anschutz hat with the adjustable peak, has anyone had any experience of these.

I have also been looking at at making one similar to the one used by Eric U, as in the pictures that I have seen it looks home made, appolgies Eric if I am wrong.
What sort of headwear are you guys using.

Mine is actually a Sauer visor. It is just really beat up. I like it because it sits higher on the head so the visor can clear the sights.

Which would actually be illegal under ISSF rules (hats are not permitted to touch the sights).

Thanks Eric for the reply and I do agree with you, it is beat up having seen a few photos of you wearing it.
But what it looks like makes no difference, if it does the job, is comfortable to wear, and doesn't touch the sights then it will be perfect.

I also did not realise until I read Robs and your posts, that it is illegal under the rules for the hat to touch the sights

I wonder then how shooters manage with the Anschutz hat with the drop down sides, as I cannot wear it without it touching the sights and then falls off.

Anyway I have just ordered the Anschutz hat with the adjustable peak which with a bit of luck will solve my problem.

It used to be illegal via a sub rule about nothing touching the gun or something, but I think it became a clarification of the rules in the 2010 clarification series, just before the world championships last year. As such shooters were often not sticking to the letter of the rules and officials were often not enforcing it - hence you saw /see shooters who were non compliant. You run the risk of being pulled up for it though if you breach the rules so it's up to the shooter to run that risk or not.

Whether or not it touches the sights, whenever side blinders are involved you have to be careful of the first part of 6.4.10.3:-
Side Blinders (either or both sides) attached to the hat, cap, shooting glasses, or to a head band, not exceeding 40 mm deep are permitted (A). These blinders must not extend further forward than to a line from the center of the forehead.

Do you mean in the last part of your post that although the peak of the cap can extend forward over the sights, but not touching them.
The blinders must not go further than your forehead, which I think would make the Anschutz hat with blinders attached illegal, please correct me if I am wrong

I don't know the specific hat you are talking about but your logic is correct. You also have the maximum height of 40mm on the side pieces.

Hi Gary,
the Anschutz hats with the side flaps became illegal some (10?) years ago for ISSF.
Still OK for NSRA comps though.

I did not realise that the hats had been declared illegal, although as far as I am concerned these days I only shoot in NSRA comps.
I am still however going to try and make a hat similar to Eric U hat but with drop down sides, which hopefully will cure the problem I have with my existing hat of it hitting the top of the sights and falling off.
