Freeland Scope Stand Spring Pressure

Hi,
Looking for some advice...I have a thing (not sure what they are called) that allows me to adjust the elevation of my spotting scope (while I'm in position) which is attached to my Freeland scope. It's like a piece of flexable wire with a knob on the end. My problem is the spring pressure is such that the "thing" will not rotate against the spring pressure, has anyone come up against this problem?
Sorry if my description is not very clear..
Thx,
D.
