.32 bullets

Has anyone tried the Berry's copper plated .32 caliber .312 83gr HBWC?

I'm currently using H&N .312 100gr HBWC in my Hammerli SP20 and was curious to find out if the copper plating reduced barrel leading.

I haven't actually used these bullets-but from responses on different Forums from people using these bullets they are not that accurate at 50 yards. For 25 yards I am sure they are OK. I think lead bullets are more accurate.If lead/leading is the issue-that is a different story.Cheers

Greetings,

If your SP-20 is typical of most Haemmerli's, the bore diameter is 0.3135". You will probably get better results using the H&N 0.314" 100 grain HBWC. Use Lapua brass and a 0.315" expander plug as not to deform the bullet during loading. 1.40 grains of VV N310 (three-ten) or 1.70 grains of Alliant Bullseye are good powders to start with.

Dave, thanks for the heads up.

I had slugged the barrel with a fishing weight (twice) and came up with a measurement of .3115 (twice) so I ordered some .312 and .313 bullets.

I just slugged the barrel again with a slightly squashed bullet and came up with a measurement of .3139 (twice).

Can't trust those fishermen!!

I wouldn't get TOO concerned about the expander plug (which you can obtain from your die manufacturer).

In my personal test, where I seated and then pulled an HBWC, there was no difference in diameter before and after. YMMV

One of these are pretty simple (but necessary) to make. Get anyone in your area that has a lathe and do some talking. The H&N bullets shoot as good as anything you can buy but they are very delicate and soft by design and need the right size expander or buying the larger .314 is a moot purchase.

You may want to verify that your mic is indeed calibrated and zeroed. The 0.314" sized diameter will be too small (if the slugged bore diameter is indeed 0.3135").
