Is there anything I can use to lube the threads on my FWB 700 cylinder that I can purchase locally that will be compatible with the seals ?

I use a very thin smear of an 'assembly paste' (Molybond GA50 - I'm sure Rocol do an equivalent) which is a thick grease containing 50% Molybdenum disulphide. It is designed to prevent fretting and galling. I'm careful to keep it away from anything but the threads. Alternatively, dive shops will sell you a silicone grease, used to lubricate their fittings, etc.

In my FWB 700 hand book it says to use FWB special grease which I guess should be available from your FWB dealer. It comes in a small white tube with nozzle.

There is a number of synthetic (non-petro based) lubricants you can on the market today. I have been using Milcomm TW-25 for years for the threads and on the O rings with great results. When the original owner of 10 ring was alive he used to sell it in his little maintenance kit. It's a little expensive ($12 for 1.5oz), but goes along way. I used a small sample packet that I got from the Shot Show many years ago and used it for five years before I had to finally buy a new tube. You don't have to use much of the lube a little goes a long way. I have been using the lube in our airguns for at least 10 years. The lube was used by the military to lube their gatling guns because it held up better then any petro based lube.

There are other synthetic lubes on the market such as Slip 2000 and M Pro have lubes that will work. If you do a google search you can find others, but I can only talk about the ones that I have mentioned. An article that I read sometime ago said that the military is moving away from petroleum based lubes as the new synthetic lubes attract less dirt and breakdown less under the hard working conditions of a full auto gun.

I wound up purchasing a product called Superlube that was available at Ace Hardware. It's a synthetic grease manufactured by the Synco Chemical Corporation. $4.99/3oz.. It was recommended by Scott Pilkington.

I was trying to avoid the special FWB grease if possible.

Regarding synthetics: I've just put up an interesting link in the Synthetic Oil thread on the Olympic Pistol forum. Caveat emptor!

When the Walther service team came over last year to the British championships, I asked them about grease on the threads and they said it was important to only use an ACID FREE synthetic grease. I guess this applies to FWB as well.
