sighting in a new rifle

Does anyone have a procedure for sighting in a new smallbore rifle at, let's assume, 25 yards?
Is there a better way than just aiming at a target to see what happens and adjusting from the fall of shot? I guess I'm not sure realistically how far off target the sights could be - I don't want to start unnecessarily damaging target backing boards.
For example, is there a method for "bore sighting"? On the assumption that the trajectory is very flat at 25 yards, would it be helpful to clamp the rifle and align the bore with a target and then adjust the sights so that they are aiming at the target too (perhaps moving the rearsight up a bit to allow for some drop in trajectory)? Likley to be pretty rough and ready but may give some indication of where the first shot might go!
Alternatively are there measurements for the height of the rear sight and foresight above the bore line? (I reckon I should be able to get the windage pretty accurate by eye.)
I haven't got it yet but the rifle will be a 1913 barrelled action. Sights are likely to be the standard Anschutz foresight (no extension) and a Centra rearsight.
Any suggestions gratefully received...
Cheers
Nick
