Free pistol competitions in the Southeast?

Hi folks-

I've been shooting Bullseye for a couple of years but am new to free pistol. I was wondering if anyone knew of any competitions not too far from Tennessee. I've checked the "Shooting Sports" publication and it looks like the closest competition would be in Indiana.

Thanks,

Bill

There used to be quite a bit of activity in Quantico VA if you don't mind shooting with Marines.

If you prefer the Doggies, there is always Ft. Benning, GA.

AFAIK, there isn't any international pistol activity going on a Quantico. We shoot FP near Yorktown, VA, and Pete runs FP matches at his club just outside of Richmond.

It's been a long time - about 16 years - since the Marines shut down their ISSF program.

Sorry Ernie, but you moved away and lost touch with "reality". The International pistol program at RiverBend (I was the last match director) ceased years ago when I couldn't get anyone to attend other than myself. The only 50 meter matches at Ft Benning occur at Spring and Fall Selection and National Championship matches - that is 3 times per year only. They got rid of PTO's a long time ago. It is a sad state of affairs indeed and one reason why I now shoot Smallbore Prone.

There were (maybe still are) free pistol matches being held in Charlotte, NC. They were held at an indoor range and were run by a guy from the Charlotte Pistol Club. I'm sorry I don't have too many specifics. I suspect if you contacted any of the bullseye shooters at the Charlotte club they could give you more info.
I'm in SC and haven't seen many matches around here lately.
I hope your inquiry turns up something positive.
Best Regards.

Bill,

We plan on having our indoor free pistol matches at the Southern Indiana R&P Club at Georgetown, IN starting in October and running through April. The dates coincide with our air rifle and air pistol program, so bring your air pistol. We shoot free pistol shortly after the air gun matches. The free pistol competition usually isn't real stiff, but it's fun and an excuse to shoot. Our indoor range is located about 5 miles off Interstate 64, just a few miles west of Louisville, KY. There is a Motel 6 at the Georgetown, IN exit. There are other hotels/ motels in New Albany, IN off I-64. You can find out more information by checking out www.southernindianarifleandpistolclub.com

IPShooter,

It HAS been a long time since I shot at Quantico. I moved to Washington, then Arizona. Lots of activity both places. Glad to hear there is something going on in your vicinity.

Misny:

Thank you for the invitation- I will make every effort to make it up there this fall or winter to check it out. I also shoot AP and would love to shoot competitively more often. I also have a friend in Louisville with whom I could stay.

Cheers,

Bill

Howdy,
I found a local (OK, 75 miles away from where I live) pistol club affiliated with usa shooting, willing to have an air pistol PTO just for me.. told them I'd pay all the freight, showed them my shooting, had to join the club and nra, but it was not that hard to put together.
you need to call around, usa shooting, NRA, (and speaking of which, are there other shooting venues that he could call, email or visit for competition?)
anyway, go find a club, call them and ask, they know the people who shoot and where , and also, they might be willing to help.
good luck. drive safe.
