Here is the story.

At Camp Perry they have built a 2.15 million dollar 80 point air gun range primairly for air rifle.

My question to Jessica McClain; who is in charge of air gun and muzzleloader was; Will there be NRA 10 M Air Pistol as a competition at Camp Perry Nationals 2010? Ms. McClain's response was that there has been a question of participation. Many shooters think of air pistol as a starting point before on gets into Bullseye.

If you would be interested in having a sanctioned national match for Air Pistol at the Camp Perry Nationals please, please take the time to email her at: jmcclain@nrahq.org and let her know you would be interested in such a match. She will present this to the committee that meets in September 2010.

Unfortunately it is too late for this to be possible this year.

CMP has taken over the Air Pistol Matches for the National Pistol Matches, hasn't it. At least that was the case for 2009:

You are correct Ed. One thing I found that I didn't like was that they don't allow cross-over competition. In other words, if one comes to the National Matches during rifle week, one cannot shoot air pistol and vice versa. I suppose they have their reasons, probably related to how they set up the range. I don't expect them to cater to someone who may want to shoot both air rifle and air pistol. I also understand that CMP's primary focus is where it should be, juniors, and most juniors are shooting air rifle in some form or another, rather than air pistol. I think that one cannot shoot anything but 3P during the smallbore phase.

I didn't realize the matches were segregated, but I wonder if it just follows the routine that when the Pistol phase is over, they want to be able to publish results. They, of course, have to for those events that award trophies.

I'm not sure how NRA ran the Grand Prix in the prior years, but I remember receiving an award long after returning from Camp Perry one year.

The trouble I had with the new Air Pistol matches, in both years, was that CMP didn't open the range for competition until the afternoon. I spoke with them about it and they seemed as though they didn't have the people to run it. I suppose the National Matches volunteer base couldn't be used in that capacity.

I have located the 2008 results at CMP. I suppose after a little familiarity one can find these things easier, but I still struggle on occasion. I am very pleased that CMP posts all their results and all are directly available if you can find the right path.**

**NRA also has past National Match Results on their site, but their method of display and retrieval is set up to only provide the most current Bulletins. One can take the current link and modify it to retrieve the older bulletins, but that is a bit of a pain. For my own use, and others who may like to, I have constructed a page which provides direct links to a lot of the Pistol Bulletins, etc. I also took the pains to provide the info for which match is under which number. Additionally, I did similar for the Pistol trophies. For anyone interested, that page can be found here:

The Air Pistol events (30 round daily re-entry & 60 round championship) are way under attended! If nothing else they are a great way to practice your slow fire game in air conditioned comfort!

I agree the CMP could work on better times of operation, particularly for those shooting teams in the afternoon. Evening hours (7-9 or so) would be perfect for many.

Make a note for this July, the Air Pistol range is located in the new white building north of the road that goes to the lodging office. They will lend you an air pistol if you don't have one. Everybody shooting the National Matches should check it out... the automatic computerized scoring is just fantastic!

I took my air pistol to Camp Perry last year and never found the time to shoot it. I was just so mentally tired after both the 900 and the team matches that the last thing I wanted to do was shoot air pistol in the evenings especially if it meant doing the drive through at McDonalds as opposed to a fun filled lesisurely dinner with my friends that I travel with. One of my friends who did shoot air pistol in the evening said that he basically shot very poorly compared to his usual scores. I think a lot of people have difficulty when they are so focused on the national matches, shooting one more event that they have to squeeze in during their down time, especially when that match does not count for much in the grand scheme of things. Bring it again this year and make an effort to get over there, at least for one of the 30-round daily re-entry matches. You will not be disappointed!

In 2008 they squadded the 60 round match... I was scheduled for Sunday after the EIC and P100. Talk about being a little out of sorts... then, in the middle of my match the hardball teams started up right outside on range 4. Made for a strange hour of air pistol to say the least!

The different matches can be confusing to discuss.

I believe the original poster is talking about the NRA National 3P air rifle event that included Progressive Position Pistol. The NRA and Cmp/USAS were holding there own separate nationals. Then things started getting confusing when they combined the pistol tournament. Pistol was being shot at the CMP/USAS event. The PPP was being promoted but not sanctioned by anyone.

This winter USAS has adopted PPP and is now sanctioning matches. I don't know where the NRA is involved. I was thankful that USAS adopted PPP, but I was disappointed that they now require USAS membership to participate at the state and national level. NRA does not require membership.

It would be desirable if the NRA would bring back PPP at their national.
